AUSTIN - Do you love getting out and exploring the amazing history that makes Texas so unique? If so, celebrate our state's heritage throughout October during Texas Archeology Month (TAM) at one of a variety of educational and fun events taking place in communities throughout Texas. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) publishes a listing of upcoming activities in the TAM Calendar of Events, now available on the THC's web site.

TAM is one of the biggest state celebrations of archeology in the country, informing Texans about how archeological sites can help tell the real stories of Texas by revealing important evidence about the state's past. From examining artifacts at a local museum to participating in a mock dig, TAM events bring history to life by highlighting the significance of the contributions made by professional and avocational archeologists.

Archeology fairs and festivals are the central events of TAM and will be held in various cities throughout the state including Brownsville, Del Rio, El Paso, Killeen, San Angelo and Texarkana, to name a few. Other TAM 2008 events include traditional craft demonstrations by specialists in pottery, basket making and flintknapping; special exhibits about archeological sites, projects and topics; and hands-on activities, including spear throwing and guided excursions to ancient rock art sites.

The THC is proud to sponsor TAM in association with the Texas Archeological Society and the Council of Texas Archeologists.
