Bears get first district win
Melissa Gaona Photo Running back Cameron Warren gets a first down for the Bears in the game against the Palestine Wildcats. Hopefully the cold crisp weather did not stop the football fans from coming out to Palestine last Friday night, October 24, to watch Brownsboro shut down the Wildcats (37-7).
From countless fumbles, to several switches of quarterbacks, to injured players, Palestine could not seem to shake it off and get any points on the board after their one and only touchdown in the second quarter.
There is now four teams tied in district standings for third place; Brownsboro, Fairfield, Athens and Palestine.
The Bears got the first possession of the game, but were only able to get two plays in, due to Brownsboro fumbling after a hard tackle.
Palestine started off with great field position from the 45- yard line, but Brownsboro's defense Charlie Stringer and Ryan Owens allowed no gain on the next play. Later, after a first down, Wildcat quarterback Olin Terry ran the ball only for Tristain Warren to bring him back causing a 2-yard loss. On third and long, a penalty was given to Brownsboro after Zach Bailey, who was playing free safety, had a great block in the endzone. The penalty was declined causing another third down. Terry tried again, but the pressure brought on by Bears Jared Bray and Will Jones was too much and he threw it out of bounds.

The Wildcats fumbles started towards the end of the first quarter along with Bear Daniel Suggs plowing in two consecutive sacks.
Brownsboro only had the ball for one play on their next possession because the ball was fumbled on the Bears 48-yard line; Palestine recovered.
Given a chance to add points to the board before the quarter ended scoreless, Palestine's quarterback was only able to gain approximately 8-yards. Terry was stopped by Bear Chris Cawthon and then sacked by Will Jones on the next play. The first quarter ended 0-0.
Quickly into the second quarter, Wildcat E.J. Spurlock caught a 39-yard pass from Terry, putting Palestine on the 1-yard line. With 11:42 on the clock, Terrance Simon ran it in for the first touchdown of the game. The kick was good and the Wildcats led 7,0.
Jones opened it up big to Brownsboro when he got a 30- yard return on the kickoff. Cameron Warren then got the first down. Later, on third and 16, Tristain Warren caught a 22-yard pass from Zach Bailey in the endzone for the Bears first TD. Only two minutes into the second quarter Ryan Smith's kick was good and the score tied 7-7.
On Palestine's next possession, Olin Terry fumbled the ball on the snap and Bear Tristain Warren recovered.
Ryan Owens came in as quarterback and wasted no time getting down to business. On the first play, Owens threw it deep into Palestine territory and connected with Keith Johnson for a 27-yard gain. After Cameron Warren and Brad McDonald carried the ball on the next two plays, Ryan owens scored on a 7-yard run with 7:13 left in the quarter. The extra-point was blocked and Brownsboro led 13- 7.
Bears defense absolutely shut down Palestine on their next possession. They not only never got a first down, but Will Jones, once again, sacked the quarterback on second down.
Bear quarterback Owens stepped in and played it huge for the Bears. On the first play, he threw a 40-yard pass to Tristain Warren. After an injury timeout on Palestine, offensive linemen Colton Croley, Chance Parks, Glen Devlin, Corbin Duke and Matt Bouchillon opened up a huge hole and Owens ran it 5-yards into the endzone. With 3:09 left till half time Smith's kick was good and the Bears score climbed 20-7.
Quarterback Terry started to show signs of pain after Dustin Edgar bombarded him, caused fumble, then recovered it for the Bears.
After both teams exchanged possessions, Terry ran straight up the middle and right before he got to the 3-yard line, Bailey and Tristain Warren got a touchdown saving tackle and caused him to fumble.
The half-time show started with the Bears leading 20-7.
Second half was a great opener by the Bears defensive linemen. Jose Hernandez and Adam Dingler stopped the Wildcats on their first possession, while Dillon Croley allowed no gain on second down. Jones and McDonald then forced Palestine to punt. Charlie Stringer then scrambled around, blocked the punt and Brownsboro had the ball again.
Into the third quarter, on Brownsboro's first play, Croley made a direct snap to runningback Cameron Warren but only gained 4-yards. Two plays later, Edgar came in and faked the punt but was also unable to gain much yardage.
On third and goal, Brownsboro scored their fourth TD of the game with 4:29 left in the third. Owens faked a handoff to the left and then threw right, 5-yards to Johnson. Ryan Smith's kick was good and the Bears left Palestine behind at 27-7.
It was at this time, Palestine's quarterback Olin Terry was already out of the game and in a left arm sling. The Wildcats switched quarterbacks several different times between Olin Terry, Michael Smith and Coby Anderson. Timeout injury after timeout injury, Palestine would continue to suffer. The Wildcats did not score again for the remainder of the game.
Keith Johnson scored again with approximately one-minute left in the third quarter. Wide open in the endzone, Johnson caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Owens. Smith's kick was successful and the score 34-7, Brownsboro.
Later in the fourth quarter, Bear Dustin Edgar striked three more points on a field goal and the game ended 37-7.
The Bears now have a current record of (1-2), (5-3).
Ryan Owens was 12 of 19 passes for a total of 219-yards and 2-touchdowns.
Keith Johnson dominated on Bears receiving with 7 catches for 162-yards and 2-TD's.
Cameron Warren led the Bears in rushing with 119- yards.
