Horton Rainey Bunch
Services for Horton R. Bunch, 74, Brownsboro, were held on Saturday, November 15, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with Monsignor Joe Strickland, and Fr. Luke Kalarickal officiating. Music was offered to the Glory of God and in honor of Horton by the Tyler Chamber Chorale. Family visitation was held immediately following the funeral Mass in the Cathedral Center. A Rosary was said for him at 6 p.m. on Friday evening at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chandler, Texas.
Mr. Bunch, beloved husband, father and grandfather, "Honey," was taken from us to be with our Lord suddenly on November 10, 2008. Born in Houston, Texas, September 15, 1934. He was the son of John Knox Bunch and Evelyn Anne Horton Bunch.
Horton graduated Lamar High School in Houston, and the University of North Texas in Denton. He served in the United States Army where he enjoyed travel throughout Europe. For 33 years he worked for GMAC in Tyler, serving as Credit Supervisor before his early retirement.
Horton is most known for his gifted tenor solo voice. He is remembered in many roles throughout Texas, including "Fiddler on the Roof," "1776," "Cavalleria Rusticana" and others. In 1976, he was chosen to sing with the All Texas Bicentennial Choir, which performed an original composition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He was in high demand as a soloist for weddings, celebrations and memorials. He was most proud of singing with the Tyler Chamber Chorale for 40 years, and his work as a soloist for several churches, First Christian in Athens and Tyler, First Presbyterian in Tyler, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chandler. He will be also remembered as a crowd-moving soloist for the Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration.
A highlight of his musical career was his long association with Yesterday's Mail, a Barbershop Quartet. Through the years they won many awards within the Southwestern District of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Just as the four men made beautiful musical harmony, so too, their close friendship harmonized through music and lively humor. Horton said, "Joe, Gary, and Mark are the best friends I ever had."
Surviving him are those who most love and remember him, his wife of almost 44 years, Sandy; three daughters, Kara and husband Michael Gorham, Lara Bunch, and Mara Gay. Honey is loved by six grandchildren, Jaden, Slater, and Chandler Gorham, Kelsey Hicks, Kendall Elbert and Maranda Gay. Horton is also survived by his brother and sister-inlaw, Knox and Sue Bunch of Phoenix, Arizona; two nephews and a niece.
Honorary pallbearers were Yesterday's Mail members: Joe Johnson, Gary Land, and Mark Skaggs; also, Gary Corley, Ed Michael and Carroll Sinclair.
