All of my local childhood heroes are gone except one. I wonder why no one took their place. Most of them were my teachers, Miss Gladys Stuart taught first grade; it seems all of her students were her own. Then it was Joe B. Stuart who was my 8th grade teacher and Boy Scout leader. What an influence he had on me! Mr. Homer Bass was school superintendent. He would let me ride his horse anytime I wanted to. Mrs. Marie Jackson taught me music. About 15 years after I graduated from high school I saw her and Mrs. Dingler eating at a local restaurant. Wanda and I went over to their table to talk with them. Mrs. Jackson told me I was her favorite student and she named her oldest son after me. Mrs. Dingler was another teacher. She was strict, but fair. Her son Jeffie Gene and I were good friends. Then there was Bro. and Mrs. M.A. Wallace who started the Assembly of God Church in Chandler. He visited in the hospital just about every day. If you were from Chandler you got a visit from him. Mrs. Wallace celebrated her 100th birthday a few weeks ago. What a great lady she is. Dr. and Mrs. G.F. Moon: Dr. Moon was an ordained Baptist preacher and was a charter member of First Baptist Church Chandler. I married one of his granddaughters. Who could forget Mr. Neuman Larkin, one of Chandler's school superintendents. It seems he always said the right thing. I wish I had that talent. This might be a shock, but one of my other heroes was Maudy Harrison, Chandler's night watchman. I liked to talk with him; he was a good man. I thank Leo Jones for seeing after him and his needs when he was an old man. It seems my life was shattered when there was a killing at a school board meeting in Brownsboro. All of my heroes left and went elsewhere to teach. I can see a parallel happening in Chandler. The last three or four years you hear nothing good coming from City Hall. It's always negative and critical. None of our elected officials, except one do you hear anything good. The people we should look up to the most to set the right example is our local police. But people call them names like Barney Fife, or Gestapo and we have a police state, or city. Again only one do you hear anything good about, so many people have lost respect for them. The Bible says to pray for those in authority, and can two walk together unless they agree.
