The start of district play is always important, but Friday night's game against Van will carry added significance for the Brownsboro Bearettes.

Brownsboro will enter District 14-3A play with a record of 16-5, three more wins than the Bearettes had all of last season.

On Friday night in Brownsboro the Bearettes will face for assistant coach Toby Mitchell as longtime Bearette head coach Fred Griffin goes for career win number 800.

Griffin's career record stands at 799-266 entering the game Friday night as the Bearettes swept both games of the Bearette Doubleheader last weekend in Brownsboro.

Last Friday the Bearettes took care of business against LaPoyner, winning by twenty points, 43-23.

Senior Chelsea Chimney led the Bearettes in scoring with 13 points. Sabrina Bradley also scored in double figures for the Bearettes with 11 points.

Brownsboro won the opening tip before turning the ball over. The turnover led to Lady Flyer points from the free throw line.

Monica Redfearn lit up the score board first for the Bearettes as she drained a three to give the girls a 3-2 lead.

Brownsboro never looked back as they outscored Poyner 10-4 in the first period and took a 19-11 halftime lead.

Grace Community was the Bearettes dancing partner on Saturday night.

After ending the first period in a 19-19 tie the Bearettes scored a game high 21 points in the second period against Grace to take a 40-35 halftime lead.

The Bearettes outscored Grace in both the third and fourth periods to secure a 73- 64 win. The 73 points scored by the Bearettes matched a season high set in the second game of the season against Eustace.

Three Bearettes scored in double figures in the nine point win. Chimney led the team in scoring with 20 points while Brittany Lee scored 10 and Sabrina Bradley scored 19 points.

Lee nailed three 3-pointers for the Bearettes while Monica Redfearn and LeCandace Bell (2) also hit a three.

Following the game on Friday against Van the Bearettes will travel to Chapel Hill on Tuesday. The Bearettes will return home on Friday, January 11 as they host Canton.

District 14-3A update:

Van won the Quitman Tournament last weekend with a 44-34 win over Groesbeck. Sarah Milewski was the tournament MVP.

Canton had been ranked in the TABC top-20 poll all season and they defeated LaPoyner 52-26 in the Bearette Doubleheader.

Bullard defeated Frankston 53-40 in the Frankston Classic to improve to 16-4.
