Sermon: (Feb. 3rd) Myths of Christianity No. 4: "I have committed the unpardonable sin. I cannot be forgiven." Scripture: Matthew 12:22-37

"So we fasted and petitioned our God, and he listened to our entreaty." Ezra 8:23

Dr. Munch has requested that members of the congregation sign up for a day of fasting during the 40 days of Lent. During this time we will offer prayers for our pastor, staff, community and congregation. Fasting is written about throughout the Bible as a symbolic abstinence from selfish and carnal desires. It is used appropriately during times of bereavement, and/or problems, when seeking God's intervention. Fasting is always associated with deep, intense communication with our Father. During the period of Lent we remember with great sorrow the death of Jesus, but with overwhelming joy, his resurrection. Fasting is a part of the celebration, for by denying the flesh in order to feed the spirit, we are recognizing in a small way the sacrifice of our Savior.

Whatever you choose to do during Lent, fasting, or giving up another desire of the flesh; remember what Jesus taught, "When you fast, put on festive clothing. So that no one will suspect you are hungry, except your Father who knows every secret. And he will reward you." Matthew 7:17-18

Copies of "The Forty Days of Prayer and Fasting -- Seeking Spiritual Renewal and Direction" an informational flyer, available in the last Sunday's brochure, will also be in the Church entrance or the Church office.

Been a Methodist all your life and ever wondered what you believe? In discipleship class we frequently come to issues that we must ask ourselves "What do we as Methodists believe?" Coming February 10th, Sunday evening, from 5-6 p.m. Dr. Munch will meet with any and everyone interested in learning more about the beliefs and doctrines of Methodism. The class will last for four weeks. If you are interested, please fill out the flyer in last Sunday's bulletin or call the Church office.

Sunday, February 3, will be the "Souper Bowl" Can Drive to support God's Open Hands. Donation boxes will be in the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall.

Remember February 6th will be the Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. The Ash Wednesday service will be held at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Purpose of Ash Wednesday is to remember the Lord's sacrifice for our sins. For: "Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning, rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, Your God." Joel 1:12-13.

Happy Anniversary to: Gene and Helen Giger, James and Loura Griffin, Dennis and Shirley Murray, and Benny and Barbara Westbrooks.

Happy Birthday to: Mark Hockman, Robert Robinson, Dorothy McHam, Russell Bradford, Douglas Crabtree, Ruth Cummings, Marc McGill, James McDonald, Erik Hemingway, and Jake Hutchins.

Thought for the Week: "Death to a good man is but passing through a dark entry, out of one little dusky room of his Father's house into another that is fair and large, lightsome and glorious, and divinely entertaining."

Written by Adam Clarke in memory of all the beloved members that have passed through on their way to Heaven.
