Chandler F.U.M.C. Sermon Feb. 17th: "Seven Deadly Sins #2; Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:1-8. "What we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will give us later." Romans 8:18 As we approach the season of Jesus' time of suffering, it seems appropriate that we reflect on the meaning or purpose of suffering. God could have just forgiven sin, yet he chose to go through the suffering of Christ. Besides forgiveness of sin, what was the purpose of crucifixion? To suffer is an unavoidable fact of living in this world. It is in suffering that God's lessons are learned. God did not create suffering, neither physical nor emotional, as a way of punishment. But it is very difficult for us to accept that God uses suffering as a lesson. But as Job cried "He delivers by distress! This makes them listen to him!" (Job 36:15). Have you delayed your visits to the dentist until you had a toothache? It was only then that you started to focus on good dental hygiene, at least for a while. We tend to treat God like the dentist. He is there when we need him, but we need him only in times of pain. God wishes for us to treat adversity as an opportunity for patience and for confidence in his love. "For he has not despised my cries of deep despair; he has not turned and walked away. When I cried to him, he heard and came." (Psalms 22:24) However, as with the dentist, one should not wait too late to go to God or everything may be lost. Last Sunday was the Boy Scout Recognition Day at the church. The Boy and Cub Scouts presented the Colors and led the congregation in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by "God Bless America." What an inspiration these groups of young men are to our community. After the service the UMM's organization held a barbecue, with contributions going to the support of the Boy Scout Troop. Over two thousand dollars were donated in support of the Troop's activities. We also enjoyed the gift of the Angelus Ringers in the 10 a.m. service. They performed "This is My Father's World" and "On Eagle's Wings." The bell choir really lifts the spirit with their heavenly sounds. They were accompanied by Taylor Cramer on the flute. Taylor is a high school junior this year and has become very accomplished on the flute. Thank you all for sharing your musical gifts. The class on Methodism, led by Dr. Munch, met for their first meeting in the church parlor. Did you know that Methodism came from John Wesley, being teased about having a "method" for all his activities? The class will be held for the next three Sundays at 5 p.m.; come and join us. Next week we will review the doctrines of Methodism. The film "Jesus of Nazareth" has been delayed until Sunday, March 16. Be sure to mark your calendar. Next Sunday, February 17th is the Love, Laugh and Lasagna Banquet to help support the Africa Mission Trip. Buy your tickets at the church office or from any UMW member today! The Marriage Enrichment Retreat will be held at Lake View Retreat Center near Palestine. The program will begin on Friday evening, February 22nd, and end Saturday the 23rd in the afternoon. Dr. Marlow, a retired United Methodist Minister, author, pastoral counselor and an outstanding teacher, will lead the program. The cost will be $100 per couple, for lodging and food. Some scholarships are available. Please call the church office if you are interested. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church."
