An afternoon blaze exploded out of control Thursday, February 7, along CR 4322 near FM 315 south of Moore Station. The fire, started in the early afternoon, burned till long after 6 pm, consuming 10 acres of land and filling the sky with smoke.

Chris Moore, West Side volunteer fire fighter, said the blaze quickly went from two to 10 acres due to the wind factor.

"We have to protect four structures here," Moore said at the scene of the fire. "We've already had to save two twice."

Moore also said the fire came within mere feet of dwellings at times. One of the structures in danger was a liquor store.

Brownsboro, West Side, Berryville, Frankston, New York, Larue and Poyner Volunteer Fire Departments were all called to the fire. A volunteer fireman from Chandler Volunteer Fire Department also showed up to combat the flames. Poyner Volunteer Fire Department did not arrive at the fire, Moore said.

The fire's biggest threat occurred whenever the flames jumped FM 315 to lick at the "fuel-heavy environment" on the other side of the road. It did this a few times over the course of the afternoon, but the flames were put out before serious damage occurred.

One storehouse was gutted by the blaze.
