Bertholf guest speaker at Kappa Pi meeting
by Lynda McQuaid

Barbara Faye Beard, Fay Blackwell, Nancy Rozell, Linda Perez (guest), Lindy Goode, Naomi Blackwell, and Benita Carver. (Also present - Lynda McQuaid) all took part in the February Kappa Pi meeting.
Nancy Bertholf brought the program for Kappa Pi chapter members on Thursday, February 7, 2008. Members met at the home of Fay Blackwell to hear Nancy speak about her experiences in publishing books in Indigenous Languages for South African school children.

Nancy has been traveling to South Africa for the last seven years during her summer vacation to work with librarians and to help with writing workshops. For the last two years she has worked with Umsinsu Press which publishes books in the Zulu and other South African languages.

Laptop computer photos gave a realistic picture of the library process and the African people. Numerous books written and illustrated by African children were available for browsing.

After a fascinating presentation, members enjoyed seeing the beautifully decorated refreshment table and eating delicious cookie-cutter sandwiches, nuts, salad and small Valentine cakes prepared by the hostess, Fay Blackwell.

Benita Carver, First Vice President presided over the business meeting. Barbara Faye Beard was given a scholarship grant for an upcoming watercolor workshop by Tony Couch that she will be attending in Mobile, Alabama.

The nominating committee presented a slate of officers for the upcoming year to be voted on at the next meeting. Kappa Pi Chapter is the only chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International that is made up entirely of retired teachers and meets during the daytime instead of evening hours.
