BJHS Bears conclude basketball season

The Brownsboro Junior High Bears played hard these past two Thursdays against Van and Athens. The Athens games on January 31 put the Bears up for some tough game play, but Brownsboro still managed to hold itself up well. The 8A team won one game and the rest came within 3 points of Athens.

In the A teams, Patrick McCarthy in the seventh grade and Keuntis Thompson in the eighth grade represented their teams with solid scores, each scoring tops (14 and 33, respectively) on their teams against Athens. McCarthy's efforts were supplemented by Johntae Harmon, Blake Ralson, Cesar Gutierrez and Ryan Chapman, who all contributed to this close game. The eighth grade game was helped along by Nick Jones, Brett Conner, Trey Volentine, Devon Johnson and Mikey Ramirez.

The 7B team also stayed strong against Athens, with Dion Ramirez and Kevin Elder as top scorers with seven points each. Stephen McGee, Wyatt Bynum, Jacob Ludford and Raul Gutierrez contributed to the team's score, though in the end Athens pulled ahead by only three points.

The story was similar with 8B, where Oscar Olivares scored tops at 12 points. The efforts of Cheston Becknal, Jordan Flynn, Donte Broussard, Dakota Payne, Zac Anderson and Jay Dunklin helped to bring the team to within 2 points of Athens' score.

The February 7 games against Van saw many of the tables turned as the 7B team doubled Van's score 22-11. Top scorer in this game was Kevin Elder with 12. Jacob Ludford had 6, Stephen McGee 2 and David Dotson 2.

The 8B Bears saw a similar victory of 30-13. Cheston Becknal and Richardson, each with 8, scored highest for 8B against Van. Jordan Flynn scored 6, Dakota Payne scored 4, Kris Bryant scored 3 and Cole Cooper scored 1.

The eighth grade A team had another success story, beating Van 39-25. Keuntis Thompson and Nick Jones scored highly against Van with 16 and 11, respectively. Devon Johnson with 6, Brett Conner with 2 and Mikey Ramirez with 1 helped to secure the game.

Unfortunately, the 7A team was not able to finish Brownsboro's total sweep. The team lost a close match of 32- 34, Van. Patrick McCarthy held himself well here at nine points, with Blake Ralson scoring five. Davonte Givens and Ryan Chapman each scored four, Cody Collier and Taylor Beall three and Shelby Rogers and Cesar Gutierrez two.

7B's overall record is 12-1 for the season. 7A finished at 10-5, 8B is 11-2 and 8A 9-6.
