Chandler Elementary School chatter

The teachers from Chandler Elementary have submitted news of their students and what they are studying:

Pre-K - February was a busy month. We celebrated and learned about so many things. We celebrated the 100th Day by counting to 100. For Groundhog Day we learned about hibernation. Valentine's Day activities included sorting and graphing colored hearts. For President's Day we learned about some famous presidents and the USA. In March, we will learn about spring and planting.

The Kindergarten classes have been Exploring Creepy Crawlies. We learned about insects and spiders. We know what the difference is between a spider and insects. We also discussed how some creepy crawlies help us and some can also hurt us. This week we are beginning to study farms, farm animals and plants. We will learn about many different things that live on farms and how plants grow. We are excited about Easter and the Easter Egg Hunt coming up on March 14th. We are also looking forward to Spring Break.

First Grade - Parents, please continue to help your child at home with school work for at least 15-30 minutes per night! Students should be able to write short stories using High Frequency words. Don't forget to work on Fluency with these boys and girls. They should be able to read 60 words a minute by the end of first grade.

Second Graders just completed a unit on chocolate. They learned what it's made from, where it grows how candy bars are made, and graphed favorite chocolates. They also studied about our February birthday presidents and dental health. Next, they will be learning about the sun, moon and stars.

Third Grade - Our school year is just flying by and it is almost time for the third graders to take their TAKS Reading Test already! Tuesday, March 4th is the day they get to show what they know! The students and teachers have been working diligently since the beginning of the year on reading skills and strategies to help them be successful, and we hope that they will all be very successful! We will be having a TAKS Pep Rally before the big day to get the third graders "pumped up"!

Third grade has also been working really hard on math! We are almost through learning all of our multiplication facts and are working really hard to become better problem solvers. The kids now can solve three-step word problems with ease and have even been writing their own original word problems for each math process.

Our students and teachers are all working extremely hard preparing our children to become successful adults! As always we appreciate everything that is done for our school and our students. Every little bit counts.

Also, remember that February is the "month of love." Show your child that you love them by starting their day out with a hug! You would be amazed at how much better their day will be. A little love goes a long ways.

Our character word for this month is `Trustworthiness. ' Trustworthiness means being honest, doing the right thing, and not cheating or stealing. Students will be recognized for perfect attendance and no tardies throughout the year. Be sure to be at school on time every day. Make sure you are in your class at 8:00.

We are collecting Box Tops again this year. Send 10 box tops in an envelope with your child's name on it. We will draw names for prizes.

Happy Birthday! Student birthdays are acknowledged in the office. Come by the office and pick up your Birthday Ribbon on your special day. Our Staff birthdays for the month of February were Mrs. Baley, Mrs. Weisinger, Mrs. Munch, Ms. Parker and Mrs. Holt.

In February we had a lot of students out with illness. Please make sure your child is free of fever for 24 hours before returning to school.

We had a TAKS pep rally in preparation for TAKS which was on February 29th. Students who read for six hours or more, turned in their forms to earn a free ticket to Six Flags. They will receive those tickets on the last day of school.

Upcoming events: March 5 - TAKS for 3rd Grade; March 13 - TAKS night for 2nd and 3rd grade parents; March 9 - Kick-off for Jump Rope for Heart; and March 17-21, Spring Break.
