District play begins Friday

The preseason is over.

Brownsboro will begin the ten-game journey towards a possible playoff appearance on Friday as they open play in District 14-3A.

In Brownsboro on Friday night the Bearettes will host the Athens Lady Hornets. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Athens enters the game with a 6-3-1 overall record while the Bearettes post a 7-8 record on the season.

Next Tuesday the Bearettes will host Van at 6 p.m. Van is ranked #9 in the Texas Girls Association Coaches poll.

Last week the Bearettes participated in the Lindale Tournament.

On Thursday Brownsboro lost the first pool game to Whitehouse 10-0.

Following a break the Bearettes faced White Oak in the second game of pool play.

Brownsboro took a short lead in the second inning against the Lady Necks, 3-2. White Oak scored six runs in the bottom half of the inning on their way to a 15-6 win.

At the start of the game it was 50 degrees, by the fourth inning the temperature had dropped to 38 degrees and it was drizzling.

Due to weather conditions the Brownsboro-New Diana game was decided by a coin flip. Brownsboro won the coin flip and drew Kaufman in the first round of tournament play.

Kaufman defeated the Bearettes 4-3. With the loss the Bearettes dropped into the consolation bracket.

Against Kaufman, Danielle Bynum and Chelsea Holcomb each had two hits in two plate appearances.

Carley Smith, Randi Smith, Krystin Groothuis, Malea Sims and Stefani Vause all had a hit for Brownsboro.

In the semi-final game against Eustace the Bearettes shutout the Lady Bulldogs 11-0.

On the mound for the Bearettes was Krystin Groothuis. Groothuis allowed just one hit in the game as she carried a nohitter into the fifth inning.

Bynum was perfect at the plate for the second game in a row as she got three hits in all three at bats.

Randi Smith was 3-4 with a double while Groothuis hit her first homerun of the season. Groothuis struck out seven batters in the game while only allowing one walk.

Going head-to-head with District 14-3A opponent Chapel Hill in the consolation final the Bearettes lost the game 4-3.

Randi Smith was 3-3 in the game and scored two runs while Sims and Groothuis each had two hits. Overall the Bearettes totaled nine hits in the game.
