East Texas Wolves upset Texas Xtreme 19-6
The Xtreme were defeated by a score of 19-6 to drop their season record to 1-3. The Xtreme entered the game with an 8-0 all-time record against the Wolves. Sixteen Xtreme players were unavailable for the game due to injuries and various other reasons including five previous starting offensive linemen, three key receivers, and starting fullback Philip Albright. The Xtreme offense totaled 184 rushing yards, 100 passing yards, 11 first downs, and 5 turnovers. The Xtreme offense has compiled 28 turnovers in four games. Offensive coordinator Brandon Thompson gained 69 rushing yards on 13 carries and Andrew Burks added 55 yards on eight carries. Quarterback Ahmed Brown was taken to the hospital in the 3rd quarter after suffering a hand injury. Thompson took over the quarterback duties and completed 5-7 passes, one interception, and 62 total yards, including a 23-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Hopkins on an option pass earlier in the game. Hopkins gained 54 yards on five receptions and Larry Scott added 37 yards on three catches. Offens ive standouts were Jerry Martin, Eric Williams, and Adrian Gonzales. The Wolves completed 7-12 passes for 127 yards, one interception, three touchdown passes, 45 rushing yards on 15 attempts, and five first downs. They scored their first touchdown on a 45-yard strike against Xtreme sub Creadell Burns subbing in for the injured Chris Nealy, and the PAT was good for a 7 - 0 lead. The Wolves scored their second touchdown pass on a 40- yard strike and the PAT failed, to take a 13-0 halftime lead. They scored their final touchdown after taking over in Xtreme territory and once again victimized Burns for a 35-yard pass, and the 2-point conversion failed. Defensive starter Lance Powell and key sub Lance May were unavailable as well as starter Billy Small, who arrived in the 3rd quarter only to play for a short time before leaving the game with an injury. National All American linebacker Lonterio Osborn was also lost in the second quarter due to an injury. Defensive standouts were Kerry Yarbrough with one forced fumble, Allen Beasley one fumble recovery, Jason Anding two fumble recoveries, Montez Wade one interception, Amos Berryman, and Jerry Martin who played the entire game at center as well as the first half at defensive tackle. Despite costly turnovers and injuries, Xtreme owners Gary Craig and Larry Anding were pleased that their team out-gained the Wolves by a total of 112 yards. The entire league will be idle on March 22 due to Easter weekend. The break will give the Xtreme time for their players to mend and add new players before traveling to Shreveport, Louisiana on March 29 to take on the Port City Jaguars. |
