Bearettes fall in district opener

In their only game last week the Brownsboro Bearettes fell to the Athens Lady Hornets in the District 14-3A season opener 17-0.
Brownsboro is scheduled to play in Chapel Hill today at 1 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Van 15-0 to open district play.
In last Friday's game Athens scored 11 runs in the top of the second inning on eight hits and two Brownsboro errors.
With one out in the bottom of the second inning Carley Smith singled to center for the Bearettes. Smith was left stranded on base as the next two Bearettes went down in order.
Athens added one run in the top of the third inning on two hits before scoring five runs in the fifth inning. The Lady Hornets had five hits in the fifth inning. Athens finished the game with 16 hits.
Brownsboro was held to just three hits against the Lady Hornets. Malea Sims and Randi Smith also had hits for the Bearettes.
On the mound for Brownsboro was Krystin Groothuis. `KG' pitched all five innings and totaled three strike outs.
Carley Smith threw out two Lady Hornets who tried to steal second base, one in the first inning and one in the fourth inning.
The Bearettes (7-9, 0-1) will face the Lady Hornets (7- 3-1) in Athens on "April Fool's Day" Tuesday, April 1 at 6 p.m.
