Jo "Jackie" Amoss Services for Jo (Jackie) Amoss, 87, of Chandler, were held Monday, April 21, at 10:00 a.m. in Chandler Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tommy Weems officiated. Burial was in Rock Hill Cemetery under the direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home, Chandler, Texas. Willie Jo Amoss, affectionately known in her younger years as "Jackie" to friends and family and in later years, Jo, Mama Jo, and Maw Maw, went peacefully to be with her Lord on April 16, 2008. She was born January 26, 1921 in Henderson County, Texas. She attended Brownsboro schools, was a lifetime resident of Henderson County, residing in Chandler for the past 40 years. She was a member of West Lake Baptist Church, a care giver, and a homemaker. Married at a young age she was left with two daughters (Sue and Molly) under two years of age, due to the accidental death of her husband. She later married Lawrence Grissom, who was killed in action in World War II, leaving an infant son, Danny Grissom. The father of James and Ben Bearden was also killed in a car accident. She married O.M. Amoss, January 29, 1964, having recently celebrated 44 years of marriage. Jo was a wonderful mother to her children and grandchildren. She was noted for her fabulous Sunday dinners, especially chicken fried steak. Even for the grandchildren she thought if she didn't prepare macaroni and cheese they wouldn't have anything to eat as this was a favorite of most. She always put her children and others first. Never wanting to ask anyone to do for her, she was a "true care-giver" to others. Jo was a long-time member of West Lake Baptist Church, although, due to illness and then a resident at the nursing home she was not able to attend in later years. She and her husband were always preparing something in the kitchen for church socials and involved in church functions until failing health called a halt to this service for their church family. Preceding Mrs. Amoss in death were her parents, William LaFaris Gunnels and Emma Martha Edith Teet, a brother, A.L. Gunnels, sister, Eula V. Cotten, a grandson, Cody Grissom, and a great-great granddaughter, Betsi Wyatt. Survivors include her husband, O.M. Amoss; sons, Danny Grissom of Chandler, Ben and James Bearden of Brownsboro; daughters, Sue (Kidd) Steding and Molly Lummus, both of Chandler; brother, A.C. Gunnels of Elmo, Texas; sisters, Imogene Featherson of Athens, Zeffie Reep of Chandler, and Betty Meador of Mabank; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. If desired, memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas. |
