Two BHS students receive Tops in Texas

The Brownsboro High School yearbook and paper received a host of prestigious honors during the Interscholastic League Press Conference at The University of Texas in Austin. The school's Bear Facts newspaper won 17 medals and the 2007 Bear Tracks yearbook won 16.

Eric Orange, senior yearbook editor, and Haley Smith, junior school newspaper editor, won Tops in Texas.

Orange won Tops for yearbook photos and Smith won for newspaper caption writing.

Orange also had two 1st place awards for photos and a 2nd and 3rd place award for yearbook design.

Other 2007 yearbook winners were Sara Scarborough with two 3rd place awards for photos and writing, Justin Taylor with two 1st place photos and one 2nd place photo, and Carter Maddox with a 1st place photo.

Orange, Maddox, Kim Golden and Jill Bragdon all received honorable mention awards for the yearbook.

On the newspaper side, Smith received 1st in caption writing, 2nd in headline writing and 3rd in computer art. Kallie Murphy got 1st in news writing and 2nd in feature writing, while Kelsey Crawford and Naomi Scott received 2nd place in editorial writing and sports page design, respectively. Orange got 2nd place photo story and 2nd sports action photo.

Smith, Orange, Scott, Sarah Gravitt and Tiffany Pate all received honorable mention a conference at once.

Orange said he was nervous when he first got to Austin, but was excited to see how well he and the journalism department did.

"The room was filled with over 1,000 people wanting awards," Orange said. "Everybody could see my pictures. "

Orange added the department worked very hard to achieve what it did.

"When you win Tops in Texas, it's a really big deal," Orange said. for the newspaper.

Patsy Lewis, UIL coordinator and journalism coach, said this conference on April 18, 19 and 20 marked a first for the Brownsboro Journalism Department.

"We've just had an exceptional year," Lewis said.
