Brownsboro sweeps UIL

Seventh Grade Band

The Brownsboro High School band took part in the yearly University Interscholastic League concert and sight-reading contest at Troup High School on Thursday, April 17. They came back with the Sweepstakes Award.

Jeff Russell, band director, said this is the 10th consecutive year Brownsboro's high school band received this trophy. To earn it, the band must receive overall first division ratings in the UIL marching contest and the concert and sight-reading contest. The first contest was in October.

Russell wrote in an e-mail message the band played "Nibelungen March" by Gottfried Sonntag, "Allerseelen" by Richard Strauss and "The Hounds of Spring" by Alfred Reed.

The most recent competition had two parts. For the concert part, bands played three selections to a panel of three judges.

For the sight-reading segment, the students had to study a piece they had not seen before, then perform it for a different three-judge panel without practicing.

Praise for the band was high, with judges calling the Brownsboro High School band "a wonderful, musical group", "extraordinary mature young musicians" and "solid, dedicated players", among other compliments.

Eighth Grade Band

The junior high school varsity band, directed by Steve Wise, received first division at the concert contest. The junior high junior varsity band, directed by Alice Slayton, performed similarly.

The varsity band performed "Dover Patrol March", "La Rejouissance" and "Moscow 1941".

Compliments for the junior high bands were numerous as well, praising the band for good fundamentals, great sounds and awesome talent.
