Andrew Dyer, junior at Brownsboro High School, was elected FFA district president at the Sandyland District Convention on April 21 in Teague. Dyer's vice president is Glenn Devlin Derek Sims, agriculture teacher at the school, said FFA presidents are elected by a combination of popular vote, test taking and interviewing.
"Popular vote is worth 50 percent, " Sims said.
The school performed well across the board at the convention.
"We did really well this year," Sims said, "and we're excited for next year because we will host the district convention."
Sims said the convention is hosted at the FFA president's school.
Dyer said he wants to see more consistent participation from the FFA district.
"I want people to put effort in the Sandyland district," Dyer said.
Dyer added at first he got chills and a sense of shock on hearing he had been elected district FFA president.
"Next year I'd like to go visit some of the schools that elected me," Dyer said. "I want to thank them for their votes and ask what they can do to help make the district better."

One of the planned FFA events for next year is the district officer camp, where area officers will get to know each other. The camp is planned for June.
The last Brownsboro Sandyland district FFA president was Phillip Smith, who graduated from BHS in 2000.
There are 16 schools in the district and well over 100 students in the Brownsboro FFA.
"FFA opens a lot of opportunities, and life's all about opportunities," Dyer said. "You live and you learn."
During the convention, students participated in speaking events and a talent competition.
For the speaking competition, Haley Suggs won fifth place in Senior Prepared Public Speaking, Hunter Walters won fourth for Junior Prepared Public Speaking and Peyton Williams won fourth for Extemporaneous Speaking.
The talent team, Matt Lough, Ryan Edwards, Haley Suggs, Garrett Herrington and Jeff Smiley, won second.
Brownsboro FFA also received banners for participating in the Area VIII Career Development Event competition on April 2 in Stephenville at Tarleton State University.
For Dairy Foods CDE, Haley Suggs, Colton Beall and Erika McGaughy won third.
In Poultry Judging CDE, Glenn Devlin, Hunter Walters, Caleb Loggins and Taylor Rushing won first.
Finally, Tracy Sims, Malea Sims, Kayli Hardin and Lee Wynn won second in Dairy Judging CDE.
