Edom cemetery to hold special service While our nation observes Memorial Day on May 26, the Edom Cemetery Association will observe its own Memorial Day this Saturday, May 10. Carolyn Hargrove, a steadfast volunteer for various Edom events, said the 150th anniversary last year was a huge deal. "We had over 100 people come out to the cemetery," Hargrove said. During the Memorial Day, friends and family of those buried at the cemetery will come to place flowers on the grave sites. Hargrove said the arrangements, which often refresh older arrangements, will appear as early as May 8. "The cemetery looks beautiful with all the decorations," Hargrove said. "It looks like a hillside of forest flowers; it's touching." The Memorial Day is also when the annual business meeting takes place. The meeting, which will cover all the finances involving the cemetery, will be held at the cemetery tabernacle at 11 am. The cemetery, Hargrove said, was founded when William Featherston came to the area with his family in a covered wagon. He fell ill and passed away; the land was used to bury him. Now around 2,400 are buried in the cemetery off FM 279 just west of Edom. The cemetery is owned by people who also own plots there. Kerry Hargrove is the president of the board and Buddy Hutchins is the manager, overseeing plot sales. |
