The Brownsboro Independent School District Board of Trustees called a trustee election Monday. The decision came as part of the board's regular monthly meeting.

As part of calling an election, the board had to designate voting and early voting sites, as well as election judges, an early vote clerk, an early vote ballot board and agents to represent the board secretary in fulfilling election duties.

Up for re-election this year are Board Members Joey Ridgle, Bobby Teague and Dusty Wise.

Board Member Ricky Wyatt made the motion to call the trustee election and Wise seconded.

The motion made placed the election on Saturday, May 9, with a main early vote site for all precincts at the Brownsboro ISD tax office, a branch early vote site for all precincts at Chandler City Hall and several Election Day voting locations.

The Election Day sites are the Brownsboro Junior High School cafeteria for precincts 3B, 3M, 4LA and VZ, Chandler Community Center for 3C and 3WS and Moore Station Water Supply Company for 4MS and 4CC.

Peggy Burch, Rosemary Parmley and Kathlene English were appointed as election judges, and Flora Banks as an early vote clerk. Elaine Goode and Elton Caldwell were appointed as agents to represent the board secretary. In addition, the election judge and staff appointed to be responsible for the vote at BJHS will be the early vote ballot board.

Anthony Bruner approached the board to inform them of the State Board of Education's stance regarding the teaching of the Theory of Evolution.

Bruner said, "In November, the state board began holding hearings on text books. For the last 20 years, textbooks have taught the strengths and weaknesses of the Theory of Evolution."

Several organizations campaigned to remove the teaching of weaknesses of evolution and the state board voted 8-7 to have the weaknesses be removed.

"If we remove the critical review of both the strengths and the weaknesses, then our nation is dumbing down the science department," Bruner said.

Teague recommended each board member take time to notify the board of education of their thoughts on this matter; official action might be taken next board meeting. March 25 is when the fiboard nal vote by the state will be made.

Next, the board opened a high school counselor position that had been unoccupied since last year. Board Member Becky Grantham made the motion to approve and Wise seconded.

No action was taken on a Mastercraft Plumbing invoice. There was a large discrepancy between the approximate cost of the work done and the ending bill. In particular, several items were identified to have been charged to the school, but were not used.

The board decided to let the school's lawyer determine what to do with the matter.

Wise and Jeffrey Fulgham, board member, made the motion and seconded, respectively, to approve the 2009-2010 budget calendar.

Rent related to a house located east of the annex building, a school-owned house, was up for consideration.

School Superintendent Elton Caldwell said, "We get $350 a month from the couple that lives there."

The family experienced what was described as a "runaway electric bill" which turned out far higher than their expectations. The board voted to forgo rent for the month of February while the couple figures out what happened.

Grantham made the motion to waive the rent and Wyatt seconded.

Perry Eaton, parent involvement coordinator with the school, informed the board of a donation from Northland Cable Television: a radio tower in Chandler along with the land.

This tower could be used for Bear Radio to begin broadcasting on a radio frequency.

"The price is right," Eaton said.

Fulgham made the motion to accept the donation so long as a fence is put up around the tower as fast as possible. Grantham seconded. The tower is located at 609 S Fifth St.

Eaton said, "If we can't go ahead then we liquidate the construction permit as well as the tower and land."

Before the board got to evaluations and contracts, they heard a level three grievance from an employee seeking reinstatement of her job.

After meeting in executive session, the board chose to uphold the administration's decision to terminate employment. Wyatt made the motion and Grantham seconded.

The board then extended a host of contracts for a year. Wise made the motion to approve the extensions and Grantham seconded.

The meeting was adjourned following the superintendent's report and news that Chandler Elementary had become a Title I, Part A Recognized Campus.
