MISD to hold board election

By Nathan Straus Statesman News

The Murchison Independent School District Board of Trustees called an election for the school. The decision to hold the election came as part of the board's regular monthly meeting Thursday, February 19.

School Superintendent Shirley Rowe said, "We need to order a school trustee election for the positions cur- rently held by Sheryl Sims and our vacant seat."

The vacant seat was held by Beverly Sefton.

Gerald Wood, board member, and Nelda Tillison, board member, made the motion and seconded, respectively, to order the school trustee election.

The board then appointed an election judge to serve for the trustee election, which will take place May 9. Wood made the motion and Board Member Rusty Abney seconded to appoint Larry VanDeman as election judge.

A voting clerk and ballot board also needed approval.

Abney made the motion and Tillison seconded to appoint Ann Hornsby as the early voting clerk. Wood made the motion and Tillison seconded to appoint VanDeman and his clerks as the early vote ballot board.

Shirley Rowe and Megan Reeves, the school's business manager, were appointed agents to represent the secretary of the school board in fulfilling the election duties of the board secretary. Tillison made the motion and Wood seconded.

The early voting site will be the administration office in the school's Rock Building and the regular voting site will be the library in the Rock Building. The Rock Building is on the MISD campus. Wood made the motion to approve the voting sites and Abney seconded.

Early voting will take place from April 27 to May 5.

With the voting issues approved, the board moved on to discuss designated funds in the school's fund balance.

Rowe said, "When we had our audit report from J.W. Lambright he recommended we increase our designated fund balance by $71,000."

This would bring the total designated fund balance to $525,000.

Wood made the motion to approve this and Abney seconded.

There was a discussion about a proposal for a facilities assessment student. The school board considered a proposal from a group to do a facilities study which would cost no more than $5,700.

Much of the discussion turned toward a room in the school so damaged it is unusable. It would cost the school between $10,000 and $15,000 to repair the room.

Wood said, "I think it would be better to take the $5,000 and put it toward repairing that room."

The board decided the school needed the facilities study done. Abney made the motion to approve the proposal for the study and Tillison seconded. Wood opposed.

Before adjourning, the board changed the date of the March board meeting. The meeting will now take place March 12. Tillison made the motion to approve the change and Abney seconded.

Assistant Principal Eric Halton tendered his resignation; it was accepted by the board in executive session.
