Attempted bank robbery suspect caught

By Nathan Straus Statesman News

Authorities apprehended a suspect in a possible attempted bank robbery Thursday, March 19. The incident took place at First State Bank of Brownsboro, Murchison branch, at around 10:20am.

Ray Nutt, county sheriff, said the attempted robbery call came in when a man in a ski mask approached the bank.

"He walked to the front door with a ski mask on, saw something he didn't like and left," Nutt said. "He was not carrying a weapon."

The suspect, later identified as Leucadio Melendez, 27, of Athens, got in a blue-green 1995 Ford Winstar minivan and drove off. The vehicle had its license plate covered.

Nutt said officers arrived at the bank within four minutes of receiving the call.

Melendez, described as around 6 feet tall with an average build and brown clothing, was stopped shortly after leaving the bank by the Athens Police Department on CR 3715 just outside Athens.

"We had great help from the Athens police and Highway Patrol," Nutt said. "It was a great response. "

Melendez was apprehended at 11:15am. He was charged with attempted bank robbery and booked into the county jail.
