Bearettes post win over Westwood

BROWNSBORO - It was a close-fought game for four innings, then a 4-run outburst in the fifth inning propeled the Bearettes to a 5-2 win over the Westwood Lady Panthers Monday, March 30th.
It was the first game in more than a week for Brownsboro, following consecutive rainouts.
With Westwood ahead 2-1, Lacey Pettit laid down a bunt single, advancing to second base on an errant throw.
Allison Palmer laid down a perfect bunt, making it to first and moving Pettit to third base. Danielle Bynum battled through an eight-pitch at-bat, drawing a walk to load the bases.
Carley Smith followed up by drawing a base on balls, forcing in the tying run as Pettit crossed the plate to make it 2-2.
Randi Smith hit a deep fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly and Palmer came home to put the Bearettes up by a run.
Statesman photo/Loyd Cook Bearette batters took their cuts, but didn't break ahead until the fifth inning against Palestine Westwood on Monday, when a four-run inning proved the difference in gaining Brownsboro a 5-2 victory and their third district win in a row. Chelsea Holcomb hammered a triple to right center for a two-run triple and the Bearettes had their final margin of 5-2.
Starting pitcher Krystin Groothuis worked a perfect sixth and seventh inning, striking out three and recording the other three outs on comebackers to the mound. It was her 12th win of the season and her third straight in district play.
www.c-bstatesman.Groothuis went the distance, seven innings, recording six strikeouts and giving up only one earned run.
The game was close early. Both teams hung zeroes on the board through the first three innings as they battled for the upper hand.
In the top of the fourth, Westwood's Jasmin Hicks doubled and later scored on El-Lessbgul's RBI single to put the Lady Panthers up first, at 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bearettes answered back.
Rand Smith singled, then moved to second on a Groothuis single. Holcomb followed with an RBI single to center for the first of what would be three RBI on the game.
In the fifth, Westwood again took the lead. On a single to right, the ball got by all the way to the wall and the runner never stopped, making it all the way home for what proved to be an unearned run and a 2-1 lead.
Then came Brownsboro's four-run bottom-of-thefifth.
The victory ran the Beearettes season record to 15-3, with a 3-0 district slate to date.
Chelsea Holcomb led Brownsboro hitters, going 2-for-3 with a triple and three big RBI.
Lacey Pettit went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Randy Smith went 1-for-2 with a run scored, RBI, and a sacrifice fly.
Allison Palmer went 1- for-2 with a run scored. Krystin Groothuis went 1- for-3. Carley Smith went 0- for-1, but had two walks, a run scored and a RBI. Danielle Bynum went 0-for- 3 with a walk and a run scored.
