Xtreme hand Chargers first loss of 2009 season

The Texas Xtreme put the first blemish on the Dallas Chargers' record, handing the previously-unbeaten team its first loss of the season, 23-21, in a game held at Athens' Bruce Field on Saturday.

The Xtreme overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to rally for the victory.

Texas outscored Dallas 13- 0 in the second half.

Reserve quarterback Brandon Thompson connected on an 8-yard pass to Creadell Barnes to cut the Charger lead to 21-16 after a failed two-point conversion attempt.

Reggie Calhoun returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown and Angel Nava added the extra point for the final margin of victory at 23-21.

The Xtreme started the game ahead, early, going up 7-0 after Jason Anding returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown.

The Chargers tied the game at 7-7 with a 31-yard scoring toss and the PAT.

Nava gave the Xtreme a brief lead again, nailing a 26-yard field goal attempt to go up 10-7.

Another long Chargers touchdown pass, this one for 60 yards, put them up 13-10. It was a 64-yard pass, plus the two-point conversion, that put the Chargers up 21-10 at halftime.

Brandon Thompson was 8-of-13 for 153 passing yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed for 94 yards on nine carries.

Kel Hines had 59 yards on 10 carries. Terrey McLemore had 49 yards on seven carries. Chris Bowman chipped in with 28 yards on five carries.

The Xtreme totaled 229 yards on the ground on 33 carries.

Lonterio Osborn had one sack, one fumble recovery and two solo tackles. Nico Adams had two interceptions to push his league-leading total to 15 on the year.

Kasey Stafford had three sacks. Kerry Yarbrough had a sack and two solo tackles. Jason Anding had two solo tackles along with his interception for a touchdown.

The Xtreme will travel to Texarkana on Saturday to take on the Texarkana Warriors.
