Marking the time

Waiting on play to resume making me impatient for games
Loyd Cook Statesman Sports

I kinda feel like I'm stuck in limbo right now. I'm the sports guy, but there really hasn't been any sports going on for the past week or so.

With the UIL shutting down extracurricular activities that involve multiple school districts - to lessen the chance of spreading Swine Flu - everything sort of just ... ground to a stop.

So, I've been doing a lot of "office boy" this week - answering phones and working the front counter.

And, as Bette Jones will tell you, smoking cigarettes out on the parking lot.

...

Bearettes head coach James Croley and assistant coach Laura Rogers sure do keep track of softball numbers.

Coach Croley e-mailed an Excel document to me - twice this season - of his players batting statistics. The most recent e-mail was for the end-of-the-season numbers.

Randi Smith ended up with the highest batting average (.520), most runs (35), most walks (21), and most homeruns (4).

Carley Smith had 32 runs scored, 18 walks, two homeruns and batted .370 for the season.

Taylor Barnes hit .500 for the year while Danielle Bynum had a .430 average with 23 runs scored.

Chelsea Holcomb hit .432 with 22 runs while Krystin Groothuis hit .404 with a homerun and 10 runs scored.

With numbers like that up and down the lineup, it's no wonder the team batting average is .400 on the nose with 203 runs scored, 120 walks and eight homeruns.

...

The Bearettes have a first round bye in the now-delayed playoffs and will play the winner of the Spring Hill/Carthage matchup as a second round game.

And the Bears baseball team will be facing Lorena in a first-round matchup.

The Bearettes playoff game will be on Tuesday, May 19th with time and location yet to be determined. The Bears game with Lorena? All that is known at this point is it will be held "somewhere between Wednesday, May 20 and Friday, May 22," according to an e-mail sent this week by Bears head coach Joe Fleming.

In the meantime, it is known about a couple of "tune-up" games set for the two squads.

The Bearettes will host Pittsburg here in Brownsboro at 6:30 p.m.. On Thursday, May 14th.

The Bears will play Canton, in Canton, at 6:30 on Tuesday, May 12th. They also have a second game set up, this one against Edgewood. It's scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, here in Brownsboro.

...

Well, for the few days, I'll have to continue my role as office boy, I guess.

I'll just polish up on my "answer the phone" voice and hope I can learn all the information I need to know in order to help out folks when they call.

In the meantime, the number of "Xs" on my calendar will continue to grow as I count down to the resumption of games and my normal job duties.

You know that I'm pulling for both teams to make deep runs into the playoffs.
