Calhoun indicted for theft
A Brownsboro man was indicted for stealing an airplane.
A Henderson County grand jury indicted Joshua Paul Calhoun, 29, of Brownsboro, on charges of felony theft in connection of stealing an airplane and crashing it in March, according to Henderson County Attorney Scott McKee.
According to an article by Kenneth Dean, staff writer for the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Calhoun claimed he purchased online a Bonanza 836 single-engine airplane for $250,000. He crashed the aircraft not far from the Athens airport during a short solo flight. He is not a certified pilot.
Athens Police Department Sgt. Don Yarbrough said Calhoun wired $52,000 to someone on the Internet to purchase the airplane and went to the Athens airport to claim possession. Airport personnel believed he was the owner of the craft and did not question him as he prepared to fly the aircraft away.
During questioning by Athens police, Calhoun claimed a friend of his took the airplane, but police determined his claims were unsubstantiated and that the named friend had died more than a year ago.
