Golden Girls car show features new contests

Paul Bryant Managing Editor

Contests and a 15th award have been added this year to the Golden Girls Gold Rush Car Show, the annual event that raises money for Brownsboro High School's drill team.

The Justin Bynum Memorial award was created to honor the 19-year-old Grace Community School graduate who died in June follow- ing a car accident near Winnsboro, Maggi Debenport said.

"He was new to our show last year. His parents will be there, and we think that's kind of special. It's something we wanted to do for his family."

Debenport is a business educator at BHS, a former Golden Girls director, and the mother of drill team member Amber Debenport.

"This is the third car show presented by the drill team booster club," she said. "Funds are raised to help offset any cost the drill team might incur during the year. We're not trying to target any particular expense, but this is a costly time of year with the team."

About 40 vehicles are expected Saturday at BHS. Entries usually include Model Ts, '69 Mustangs and choptop '48 Mercurys.

Among the 14 other awards to be handed down, three judges will decide which participants will receive 13 of them.

The drill team will award the Golden Girls Choice.

And contests are new to the event. Those include games called "panty dash," "kill it and coast," and "street sweeper."

"We're anticipating a good turnout," Debenport said. "We hope to have more than 40 cars, and I really want to encourage spectactors to come out."

The car show is set to begin at 9:30 in the student parking lot. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be sold, and door prizes will be awarded.

Entry fees and admission prices apply.
