More than 300 yards rushing - and a Brownsboro defense that tightened up near the end of the first half and threw a shutout the rest of the game - added up to a 40-7 drubbing of the Rains Wildcats during Homecoming Friday.
Brownsboro (4-0) totaled 439 yards offense (339 rushing) while holding Rains (0-5) to only a second quarter touchdown.
Bears head coach John Settle said leaning on the running game against Rains hadn't been the original plan.
"We wanted to throw the ball some," Settle said this week. "We hadn't been able to for a couple of weeks because of the weather. But we were running the ball so well (against Rains) that we just stuck with it."
Senior running back Cameron Warren totaled 190 yards on the ground, including a 25-yard touchdown scamper with 4:25 left in the first period to get thee Bears on the board first.

While the offense put up 21 points in the second quarter, it was the defense that began to take control of the game despite giving up one long run (62 yards for a score by Rains QB Trevor Vendiver),
When the Wildcats neared midfield midway through the second quarter, corner Tyler Rogers hit a receiver solid in midair just as the ball arrived, knocking it away and forcing a fourth down and a Rains punt.
On the last drive of the half, Rains drove to the Brownsboro 9- yard line, where the Wildcats had a first and goal with 32 seconds left.
Outside linebacker Brad McDonald sniffed out a wide receiver screen in the flat, leveling the receiver for a four-yard loss as the clock ran out on the half and keeping the Wildcats out of the end zone.

Also, McDonald caught a 19-yard touchdown pass, Austin Adair returned a punt 70 yards for a score, and Jon Jon Thompson caught an 18-yard scoring pass from Ryan Owens to account for the Bears point total in the second period.
In the third quarter, it was again the defense that bent but didn't break.
"They played well," Settle said, although noting his unit did give up some yardage. "That's the beautiful thing about throwing the ball, you can make some yards. But we kept them out of the end zone, so I was comfortable with it."

A 54-yard pass play by Rains moved the Wildcats to the Brownsboro 30-yard line, but the defense stiffened, knocking Rains back a yard and forcing three incomplete passes to take the ball on downs.
Rains was moving the ball on its next possession as well, advancing to the Brownsboro 27. But safety Zach Bailey stepped in front of a Vendiver pass at the 11, returning it to the Bears 28 to stop the threat.
And on the first play of the fourth quarter, Bailey snared his second interception of the game, returning it to the Bears 35-yard line.
Seven plays and 65 yards later, the Bears had another score on a 21-yard pass from Ryan Owens to Tyler Rogers and a 33-7 lead.
