Jr. High splits games with Van
The Brownsboro junior high Bears won two and lost two against the Van Vandals in games held Thursday, Oct. 1.
It was the 8th grade "B" and 7th grade "A" squads coming way with wins, while the 8th "A" and 7th "B" teams came out on the short end of the scoreboard.
8th "B" 20, Van 0
Michael Dziema had a 50- yard touchdown run, Phillip Smith ran one in from 45 yards out and Dusty Osborn caught a 19 yard scoring pass as the 8th grade "B" squad shut out the Vandals.
Along with the scoring trio, running back George Black, quarterback WEston Weber and tight end Dusty Osborn on offense got nods.
On defense, it was linemen Chris Pense, Levi McDonald and Dziema, along with free safety Taylor Davis (1 INT), linebacker James Herrington and free safety Smith earning praise from the coaching staff.
The Bears are 3-0-1 on the season.
7th "A" 22, Van 6
Chris Givens caught a 56- yard touchdown pass as the Bears defeated Van by 15 points.
Running back Trent Volentine, quarterback Will Bailey, linemen Brady Burleson and Dalton Dworaczyk, wide receiver Chris Givens and tigh end Landon Mason drew notice from coaches after the game.
On defense, it was linemen Burleson, Chase Cunningham (fumble recovery) and Dylan Santos, linebackers Baylon Werhman, Cody Renfro and Turner Taylor, and Jon Howard (fumble recovery) that drew notice.
It was the first win of the season for the Bears.
Van 12, 7th "B" 6
Van held onto a one-touchdown win over the Brownsboro Bears.
Daven Teel got the lone Brownsboro score on an 84- yard run.
Coaches gave the nods to Teel at running back, along with fellow RB Romero Brown, quarterback Clay McCoy, and linemen Chris Villalobos, Casey McCoy and Wyatt Howard.
On defense, lineman Isaac Ridgle, Joshe Mesa and Corey Patterspm. cornerback Nick Bjelland (1 INT), and linebackers Jametrick Lovelace and Jeremy Silvey got nods from the coaching staff.
Van 30, 8th "A" 0
The 8th grade "A" team gave up the first points they've allowed this season ... but it was a lot as they fell by 30 points at the hands of the Van Vandals.
On offense, quarterback Tyler Thomison, wide receivrs Ryan Covingon and Deandre Cook, running backs Jesse Ray and Mitchell Penny and tight end Swade Houston drew coaches' notice.
On defense, it was linebackers Thomison and Penny, along with Ray and free safety and lineman Houston and Dustin Foster that were tapped by the coaches.
