Taking a break from the grind
Loyd Cook

Nice break.

For me, I missed not having football on Friday. But it was the only Friday of the year until Christmas break that I could take for myself and be like most of our friends and neighbors.

Sometimes, you just have to step back for a second and take advantage of the chance to take a breath. Then, you can recharge your batteries, clear your mind, and get ready to roll again.

I think that's true for all of us. A lot of times we just don't take advantage of those opportunities, though.

Me, I will. After all, I'm getting a little gray around the edges.

...

That "gray" reference was obviously an aging reference.

And, on the subject of aging, who else better to talk about than Brett Favre.

Monday night's game had to be sweet for the soon-to-be 40-year-old quarterback. Deciding Favre was getting on in years, Packers management decided it was time for their kid quarterback to take over.

And, to be fair, the Packers got tired of having to wait every year for Farve to decide whether or not he was going to retire. I know that had to mess with their draft planning.

But ... they were in a bad public relations situation. One of the all-time greats who had only played in Green Bay ... and they decided they had to force him out or make him accept a backup role.

Two years later, after Favre has left the Packers, he's still firing away, making the throws, coming back in the last minute.

And (remember that bad public relations I mentioned?) Favre came back to haunt them.

Three touchdown passes, 271 yards, only a few incompletions. It was basically a no-contest game although Green Bay came back late to make it look close, losing 30-23.

And Packers general manager Ted Thompson looked like a deer in the headlights on all the television shots shown during the game.

Regardless of the class Favre showed in post-game interviews, saying all the right games about just wanting the win and not worrying about one game ... you know it had to be a real pleasure for him.
