The Brownsboro Bears put 28 first-half points on the board en route to a 42-18 win over the Westwood Panthers in the opening game of District 20AAA play.

The Bears offense had 488 total yards in a game held in Brownsboro Friday.

Brownsboro (5-0, 1-0) opened with 21 unanswered points before Westwood (3- 3, 0-1)scored on a long pass out from a scrambling quarterback.

It was another week playing in the mud for the Bears after continued precipiation in the area. Even Bears head coach John Settle is getting a little tired of it, he said.

"I am," Settle said Monday. "And practicing in it, too. It's hard to throw the ball around when you're running around in the mud."

Senior quarterback Zack Bailey opened the scoring at the end of the Bears first drive, running it in from six yards out. Running back Cameron Warren scored six minutes later on a one yard run.

Warren found the end zone again early in the second period, diving in from three yards out with 5:40 left in the half.

It was the second of three touchdowns Warren -13 carries, 120 yards - would have for the evening.

The Bears ground game totaled 301 yards for the game, as their offensive line continued its stellar play.

"It's a good group, the most consistent group," Settle said. "I've got three, 3-year starters and a 2-year starter. They're playing pretty well."

Glenn Devlin, Matt Bouchlin and Colton Croley are the 3-year starters. Corbin Duke has been starting for two years on the offensive line.

Westwood quarterback Tevin Watson, with receivers covered and pressure from the Bears defense, scrambled around the backfield until wideout Cameron Shead came open. The pair connected on a 34- yard scoring play with 3:34 left in the half, cutting the Bears lead to 21-6.

But the Bears wasted no time answering that score with one of their own.

After the ensuing kickoff, Brownsboro took over the ball at its own 31-yard line.

On the first play, Keuntis Thompson slanted off the left tackle and broke the run to the outside, outsprinting the Westwood defense on his way to a 69-yard scoring play. When Jose Mendez added the extra point, the Bears were up 28- 6 with 3:05 left in the half.

The Panthers managed to answer back with a another touchdown pass, this one of 59 yards from Watson to Dominick Turner with 3:05 left in the opening half.

But Westwood never got any closer.

Deondre Taylor broke wide open and took a pass from Bailey that resulted in a 74-yard scoring play with 3:03 left in the third period and Warren tacked on his last touchdown of the night when he split the defense for 48 yards midway through the fourth quarter.

The Panthers scored late on a two yard run to post the final, 42-18, margin.

It was a win Settle and his players had been waiting for.

"It was a really satisfying win because they've beaten us ... the last two years," Settle said. "It was satisifying for me and it was satisfying for the kids."

Notes ... Jose Mendez went 6-for-6 on his extra point attempts against Westwood. Jarrad Davis led all Bears defenders in solo tackles with eight. Both Zack Bailey and Cameron Warren recovered a fumble while Davis caused a fumble. Michael House sacked the Westwood quarterback twice and Colby Bragg and Brad Lento each chipped in with a sack for the Bears defense. Keuntis Thompson had 82 yards rushing on five carries while Bailey had 74 yards on 10 carries. Each had a rushing touchdown. Ryan Owens was 5- for-8 passing for 64 yards while Bailey was a perfect 4- for-4 for 123 yards and 1 touchdown.
