FOR THE DEFENSE

FAIRFIELD - The Brownsboro Bears opened with 20 unanswered points en route to a 33-14 district win over the Fairfield Eagles Oct. 16.
And the Bears (6-0, 2-0) defense recorded two sacks, forced eight fumbles and recovered five fumbles, plus added two interceptions as they held back a large Fairifield (0-7, 0-2) offensive unit.
Turnovers are always important, Bears head coach John Settle said, and the seven total takeaways by his defense were definitely had an effect on the Eagles offense.
"(Turnovers) help for sure," Settle said. "Especially on a night when we weren't all that sharp offensively. We'll take them for sure."
In all, the Bears got 26 points off those turnovers, including their first touchdown and their last.

Defensive end Jarad Davis forced three fumbles while coming up with two recoveries. Defensive tackle Justin Vause forced one fumble and recovered two, while Colby Bragg also recovered a fumble.
Linebacker Brad McDonald, corner Austin Adair, linebacker Jon Jon Thompson and defensive Tackle Corbin Duke also forced one fumble apiece.
Tyler Rogers got both Bears interceptions ... and both were made in the end zone to thwart Eagles scoring attempts.
After the Bears were up 14- 0, the Eagles ran the ensuing kickoff back to their 43-yard line ... and began to move it down the field, sparked by a 20-yard run and a 25-yard run.
With a second-and-12 at the Bears 17 midway through the second quarter, Eagles quarterback Justin Terry went for the score.
And Rogers lept high in the end zone, near the right sideline, and slapped it with one hand into the other before pulling it down for a circus catch interception.
Those end zone stops by Rogers had to be a blow to the Eagles offense, Settle said.
"It definitely takes the wind out of (an offense's) sails," the coach said. "It's disheartening. "
Early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles were driving, again, and had the ball on a third-and-goal on the Bears 17, again, and Rogers picked off Terry ... again.
Cameron Warren scored the first touchdown of the game after Jarad Davis recovered an Eagles fumble at the Fairfield 1-yard line. Jose Mendez added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
Vause got the second fumble recovery for the Bears, setting up the offense on the Fairfield 42-yard line.
Brownsboro crept down the short field, taking 10 plays and about 10 minutes of clock time, while overcoming two penalties, to score on a fourthand goal. Quarterback Ryan Owens hit Brad McDonald from eight yards out in the back corner of the end zone.
Mendez hit another extra point to pad the lead at 14-0.
Fairfield was receiving on the opening kickoff of the second half, but a hard hit by Davis knocked the ball loose and McDonald recovered at the Fairfield 41.
Two plays later, sophomore running back Keuntis Thompson split the defense on a 30-yard run for the Bears third score of the game and a 20-0 lead.
The final two quarters saw an exhange of touchdowns.
The Eagles ran 12 plays, covering 69 yards and about five minutes of clock time before Jered Taylor powered in for a yard out. But Fairfield was still down, 20- 7.
Brownsboro's offense answered right back.
It took the Bears six plays to cover 74 yards, but Warren got the last 57 yards and the touchdown at the 3:49 mark of the third quareter. The Bears were back up by 20.
Bragg got his fumble recovery with about a minute left in the period ... a takeaway that set up the Bears last score.
Matthew Simpson scampered in from five yards out with 11:40 left in the game and a 33-7 lead.
Fairfield added a late touchdown run by Terry from one yard out ... but, with only 30 seconds left in the game, it was too little, too late.
