SMITH COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
James Wilkins will give a presentation on Ed Sharp at the Smith County Historical Society's meeting on Tuesday.
Born in New Jersey, Sharp came to Tyler in the early 1850s and had a hardware store on the square.
He entered politics and was involved in Sam Houston's unsuccessful run for Texas governor in 1857.
Wilkins is an active, longtime member of the Society, well known for his "Chronicles of Smith County" work.
He has been the speaker for numerous SCHS and East Texas Historical Association meetings, and wrote a book published in 2008 titled "A Civil War Tragedy," a historical account of an 1864 triple hanging in Tyler resulting from the vengeance of Quantrill's Guerillas.
Wilkins serves on SCHS' Jack T. Greer Memorial Fund Committee.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Carnegie History Center on South College Avenue in Tyler.
