The streak is over.
After opening the season with six straight wins, the Brownsboro Bears dropped their first game of the season, 42-26, to the Palestine Wildcats.
Palestine (5-3, 3-0) took over the District 20AAA lead from Brownsboro (6-1, 2-1) with the win.
The Bears kept close to Palestine through two quarters, but the Wildcats opened the second half with 14 straight points to open up a lead that Brownsboro could not overcome.
"They're pretty good and we didn't play well," Bears head coach John Settle said Monday. "They didn't make mistakes and they're pretty talented. That's it in a nutshell."
Although the loss may well have cost Brownsboro a chance at a district title, it doesn't preclude the Bears from advancing to the postseason.
Settle
Settle said his squad has to win one of the last two games to clinch a playoff spot.
It was a big play that sparked Palestine's first possession of the game.
After Brownsboro's Tyler Rogers had punted the ball to the Wildcats 13-yard line, it didn't take Palestine long to get to the other end of the field.
On the second play of the possession. quarterback Olen Terry hit wideout Kenneth Green up the home sideline, a pass play that covered 75 yards to the Brownsboro 10-yard line.
Two plays later, running back DeCroy Shivers scored from eight yards out and kicker Travis Atkinson added the extra point for a 7-0 Palestine lead.
Brownsboro made only one first down on its next possession before having to punt, but the Bears defense forced a three-and-out possession by Palestine.
Owens
After Austin Adair returned the Wildcats punt 13 yards, it took Brownsboro seven plays to cover the remaining 47 yards to the endzone.
Jon Jon Thompson took a screen pass from quarterback Ryan Owens, cutting behind a Rogers block for five yards and the score.
But after the extra point was blocked, the Bears reminded behind, 7-6.
Brownsboro would never have a lead in the game.
The Bears defense started off the Wildcats next possession by holding Palestine to two yards on its first two plays.
But Terry hit wide receiver Eric Robertson for 49 yards and the Wildcats second score of the game. The extra point extended Palestine's lead to 14-6.
Once again, the Bears offense responded.
They drove 65 yards on 8 plays in three minutes, two seconds for a score. Senior running back Cameron Warren broke free on a 17-yard run for a Brownsboro touchdown.

But, after a missed 2- point conversion attempt, the Bears were still behind at 14-12.
Palestine's offense drove 59 yards in answer, scoring with 4:32 left in the half for a 21-12 lead.
Brownsboro continued to answer the call, driving down the field in a no-huddle offense with the clock ticking. Owens got his second touchdown pass of the half, hitting Rogers from 25 yards out right at the goal line to cut Palestine's lead down to 21-18.
That was as close as the Bears would get the rest of the way.
The Wildcats took the opening possession of the second half and, on the first offensive play, Terrance Simons broke free on a 41-yard run to the Bears 7-yard line.
Two plays later Terry scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns of the night.
And Terry scored again, four minutes later, from 32 yards out to put the Wildcats up, 35-18.
K. Thompson
For the Bears, sophomore running back Keuntis Thompson broke free on a 47-yard run, scoring with 5:43 left in the third period.
Owens hit Deondre Taylor for the 2-point conver- sion to narr o w Palestine's lead to 35- 26.
But Brownsboro was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Terry recorded his final rushing touchdown of the night on a 5-yard run about three minutes into the fourth quarter to post the final score of the night.
Notes: Starting running back Cameron Warren was in and out of the lineup all night, as he battled an ankle injury. Warren still rushed 12 times for 74 yards and a touchdown Keuntis Thompson had 66 yards on four carries. J.T. Cox forced a fumble, and Zach Bailey recovered it, for the Bears only takeaway of the game. Bailey led the team with 11 solo tackles. Keuntis Thompson, Will Spradley and Jarad Davis each had four solo tackles to come in next behind Bailey.
