KERENS - It was an evening of basketball that was physical, marked with a lot of fouls and frustrated players.
But the Brownsboro Bearettes marched through, posting a win by their varsity and a narrow loss by their freshman in games against the Kerens Lady Cats in the Kerens gymnasium Friday.
The Bearettes varsity squad posted a 17-point win, while the freshman squad lost by seven points in a game against the Lady Cats junior varsity.
Kerens has no freshman team.
Varsity 49, Kerens 32
The Bearettes outscored Kerens in three-of-four quarters, posting a 49-32 road win.
Desiree Johnson hit a six-foot jumper from the right baseline and Synola Harmon hit a one-hand runner driving down the lane to put Brownsboro up by a 4-0 count in the opening minutes of the game.

Kerens scored the next four points to pull into a tie, but it would be all the scoring in the quarter for the Lady Cats.
Brownsboro ran off the next 11 points to take command.
Yniqua Mosley started the run with a jumper from just inside the 3-point arc and Harmon hit a 3-point shot from the left wing with post Hillary Shaffer hitting one-of-two free throws in between.
Harmon ended the quarter with another jumper from the left wing, this one from mid-range.
The Brownsboro run continued in the second quarter as the Bearettes opened with the first six points.
Shaffer scored two on an offensive rebound putback, then Laquesha Cooper hit two free throws and hit a layup off a nice pass from Lakeshia Johnson to complete a fast break.
Kerens hit eight unanswered points to narrow the Brownsboro lead to 21- 14, but a nice inbound play netted the Bearettes an easy Shaffer layup and a nine-point lead just before the first half buzzer sounded.
In a two-play series that was an example of what happened through much of the game, it was teamwork and good passing that got Brownsboro clicking on the scoreboard again.
Shaffer fed Cooper underneath the basket for a score. Then a pass from Desiree Johnson to Shaffer was relayed to Cooper, once again netting an easy layup.
Two Shaffer free throws ended a sixpoint Brownsboro run and posted a 29- 16 lead.
Midway through the period, Lakeshia Johnson hit Chelsea Chambers and another layup and Harmon pulled up on the fast break to hit a short jump shot as the Bearettes were up 33-18.
The final period saw Brownsboro score 16 points to 12 for Kerens.
Harmon led all scorers with 18 points while Cooper added 13.
Shaffer had eight points; Chambers had four points; and Tiffany Hurd, Mosley, and Desiree Johnson each scored two.
Freshman 26, Kerens 33
The freshman squad played the Kerens JV essentially even for the final three periods of the game, it was a slow first quarter that proved their undoing.
Baylie Connor made one free throw to account for the only Bearettes point in the opening period, while Kerens put up nine.
The Lady Cats scored 26 points over the final three periods of play and the Bearettes put up 25 in the same time period.
Brownsboro was led by point guard Jacobi Parker's 11 points.
Morgan Barnes was next at four points.
Shayla Mitchell and Tori Schultz had three points each, while Megan Garrett, Rachel Pate, and Connor had one point
