CHAPEL HILL - Brownsboro built an 11- point lead at half-time and held on through a wild second half to post a sevenpoint win, 69-62, over the Chapel Hill Bulldogs last week, just before Thanksgiving break.
Chapel Hill got close twice in the second half. They opened to the third quarter on a 10-point run to cut the Brownsboro lead to a single point, then used an eight-point run in the fourth quarter to cut a Bears lead from 10 to two at 58-56 with about three minutes to go in the game.
It was clutch foul shooting by Jacob McCarthy and Nick Jones that pushed Brownsboro back out to a comfortable, late-game margin.
McCarthy hit four consecutive free throws and Jones hit a pair after being slammed under the boards.
Add in a fastbreak passing chain that went from Cameron Warren to Ryan Owens, then to McCarthy for a layup - and a McCarthy rebound from which he made a turnaround jump shot in the lane.
Brownsboro was up 68- 60 with under two minutes to go.
Tyler Rogers closed out the Bears scoring with a free throw and Chapel Hill was able to manage only two free throws during the waning seconds.
McCarthy led the scoring with 35 points (10-of-13 from the free throw line) and added six assists.
Ryan Smith had nine points and dropped 10 assists on the Bulldogs.
Zack Bailey, Rogers and Owens each had five points. Warren had four points and four boards. Jones had four points. Bret Ralson added two points.
