Freshman Bears win tourney division, JV finishes third
The freshman Bears rolled through the Grand Saline tournament, taking home the championship in their division, while the junior varsity boys won third place in their division at the same tournament.
The freshman easily defeated Alba-Golden, taking a 51-18 win in the championship game. The junior varisty won over Mineola, 58-34, in the third place game.
Freshman team runs through tourney
The freshman Bears wasted no time in taking over the championship game at the Grand Saline tournament, opening up a 26-11 lead at half-time of the championship game against Alba-Golden.
They put the game away with a 17-2 third quarter, en route to a 51-18 win and the tournament title.
Jacob Ludford led all scorers with 14 points, while Patrick McCarthy added 12 points for the victorious Bears.
Taylor Beal had seven points; Ryan Chapman had six points; and Kevin Elder had four points.
Demetrius Moore, Brody Chambers and Travis Daniels each added two points and Cody Collier had one point in the championship game.
The freshman also used a strong first half in defeating Sulphur Springs in the semifinal game, 66-38.
Brownsboro was up 36-22 at half-time, then outscored Sulphur Springs 30-16 over the course of the final two periods of play.
Taylor Beall led the scoring with 16 points, Jacob Ludford had 13, and Blake Ralson had 11 points.
Patrick McCarthy had eight points; Travis Daniels added six; Cody Collier and Demetrius Moore had four points each; while Ryan Chapman and Brody Chambers each had two points.
The freshman played a closer game to open the tournament, but outscored the Malakoff Tigers in three of the four quarters they faced each other.
Brownsboro won that opener against Malakoff, 37- 24.
Blake Ralson led with nine ponts, while Taylor Beall had six points, and Patrick McCarthy and Jacob Ludford each had five points.
Ryan Chapman had four points and Cody Collier, Kevin Elder, and Demetrius Moore had two points each.
JV wins two, loses one at buzzer, during Grand Saline tourney
The junior varsity outscored Mineola in each of the four quarters of the third place game, en route to a 58-34 win.
The Bears were up 39-27 after three periods of play, then ran off with the game behind a 17-7, fourth quarter performance.
Scott Spearman led the way with 11 points, while Cody Strickland added nine points and Willie Miller, Keuntis Thompson and Corbin Duke each had seven points.
Chris Stringer had six points and Deondre Taylor and Chris Bryant each had four points. Grayson Parker had three points, while Charfus Mayfield, Brett Conner and Michael O'Conner had two points each.
It was a last-second loss that knocked Brownsboro out of the tournament's winners bracket, as a last secoc shot vaulted Sulphur Springs over the Bears by a 55-54 count.
Coach Jeff Hutchins said the junior varsity squad had a shot at the buzzer for the win, but couldn't sink it.
Corbin Duke led the way for the Bears with 17 points and Keuntis Thompson had 12.
Charfus Mayfield had nine points and Chris Stringer had seven points. Deonadre Taylor had five points and Scott Spearman contributed four points.
The junior varsity Bears opened the tournament with a 68-40 win over Quitman, opening the game up with a 59-31 lead after three periods of play.
D.Z Moss led with 14 points, Corbin Duke had 11 points and Keuntis Thompson had 10 points.
Brett Conner, Cody Strickland and Michael O'Conner had five points each. Jonathan Radford and Grayson Parker had four points each and Charfus Mayfield had three points.
Chris Bryant, Scott Spearman, and Willie Miller had two points each. Cole Cooper added a free throw.
