The Brownsboro Bears - in the words of former Texas Longhorns and Detroit Lions quarterback Bobby Lane - didn't lose the game, they just ran out of time.

Bears guard Jacob McCarthy hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer in the championship game of the Great East Texas Shootout, but Brownsboro fell two points short as the Crandall Pirates took the annual title, 48-46.

McCarthy's shot from behind the arc was one of five he made during the title game as he led the Bears with 18 points.

The senior guard got the scoring started for the Bears, sinking one of two free throws awarded via a technical foul assessed Crandall for a dunk during pregame warmups - a no-no in high school basketball outside of regulation play.

That single point was the difference in the first half, as Brownsboro led 18-17 after the first period and 27-26 after the second.

The Bears increased their lead to four after outscoring the Pirates 9-6 in the third. McCarthy hit one of his threepointers in the period and senior post Cameron Warren (4 points) turned an offensive rebound into a two-point putback.

Zack Bailey (9 points) put the Bears up 34-31 when he hit a one-hand leaner from the lane, and put the capper on the period when he took a pass down in the blocks and worked it into a turnaround scoop shot for the final two points of the period.

Ryan Owens (4 points) hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth to put Brownsboro up 40-36. But the Bears went cold during the next few minutes, falling behind 41-41, then knotting the score on a Bailey free throw, and falling behind on a Crandall 3- pointer.

Down 44-41, the Bears never regained the lead from that point on.

Ryan Smith added seven points for the Bears and nick Jones had four to round out the scoring.

In the semi-final game against Chapel Hill, the Bears used strong, fourthquarter defense to take a win from a tight game.

The Bulldogs had led throughout the game - 10- 7 after one, 27-25 after two, and 40-38 at the end of the third period.

It was a 15-6 fourth quarter that propeled the Bears into the championship game.

McCarthy led the Bears attack with 23 points while Bailey had 10 points.

Cameron Warren and Ryan Smith had nine points each while Nick Jones added two.

Brownsboro also won both of its Thursday games in the tournament. The Bears defeated Quitman, 60-42, and Kemp, 46-23.

In the Quitman game, McCarthy led with 15 points, followed by Warren with 14 points. Nick Jones had 11 points in the game. Smith added nine points while Owens had five points, Bret Ralson four points and Bailey added a bucket.

In the Kemp game, McCarthy notched 23 points and Warren added nine. Bailey had seven points, Owens three points, and Ralson and Tyler Rogers had two points each.
