Defense sparks Bears second half comeback

Stout, second half defense by the Brownsboro Bears resulted in an eight-point victory and the squad's 11th win of the season.

Brownsboro (11-3) held the Lindale Eagles (11-3) to 15 total points over the final two periods of play.

"At half-time, we talked about stepping up our defense and making them take bad shots," Bears head coach Jeff Hutchins said via e-mail this week. "We did a great job of that in the second half, plus we blocked out and rebounded really well.

"It was a true team effort. These buys just find a way to win."

The Bears offense scored 15 points in the third quarter alone against their Class 4A opponents, on their way to a 27-point second half.

The turnaround by the Bears erased a 25-21 half-time deficit, as Brownsboro took a 48-40 victory in Lindale.

Jacob McCarthy had 15 points to lead Brownsboro. Ryan Smith had 12 points and Zack Bailey added eight points.

Tyler Rogers had five and Ryan Owens and Cameron Warren had four points each.

The Bears head to Ft. Worth to play in the Whataburger Invitational Tournament, set for Dec. 28-30. They open their first game at 9 p.m., Monday, against Class 3A's No. 9-ranked Burkburnett at Haltom City High School.

Brownsboro's next home game is set for Jan. 2, as they host the Wills Point Tigers. Play starts at 1:30 p.m. with the freshman team game, followed at 3 p.m. with the junior varsity and at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity contest.
