Focus must move toward development, official says
Moffeit
CHANDLER -
Members elected for its 2010 board of directors, the Chandler Brownsboro Area Chamber of Commerce must shift its focus to business development and away from charity next year, an official said.
"One of the things I would like to see the chamber do is get more involved in the business of being a chamb e r , " Moffeit said. "The chamber and economic development go hand-in-hand."
Moffeit is one of four new members of the CBACC’s board of directors. The others are Lloyd Smith, Mike Wilson, and Perry Eaton.
The chamber, Moffeit said, has been distracted by financially supporting nonprofit organizations and other entities. While those endeavors are worthwhile, they should not be priorities for the CBACC.
"It’s not so much about community service," he said. "I’m not opposed to those things, but we need to move toward business development. I want us to be a more mainstream chamber of commerce."
New members are also needed, officials have said. Less than 80 businesses are part of the CBACC, and Chairman Dennis Mack said he’d like at least 100 members.
"Membership has been as high as 89. I’d personally like to hit 100. We have a few businesses that benefit from us, but they’re not members.
"Next year, besides doing a membership drive, we want to promote the community and put more of an effort in business development. "
Moffeit said he will also recommend quarterly chamber luncheons "to bring our members together more often."
The CBACC schedules twice-monthly lunch meetings in Chandler and in Edom, but only a handful of members usually attend.
