Bearettes win two during annual event
Brownsboro post Hillary Shaffer (15) moves down the court on the fast break during the Bearearettes Doubleheader on Monday. She had 23 total points for the two-game event and point guard LaQuesha Cooper had 21 has the duo led the Bearettes.
The Brownsboro Bearettes scored the majority of their points in the first and third quarters, and used a strong defensive effort, to defeat the La Poynor Lady Flyers, 37- 25, in their second of two games in the annual Brownsboro Bearettes Doublheader - a kind of "mini-tournament."
(Game One for the Bearettes is included below in the "In Briefs" package from the Doubleheader.)
The Bearettes were hot early, running off the first 11 points of the game. They would also put up 18 total in the first quarter, with post Hillary Shaffer and shooting guard Synola Harmon accounting for 16 of them.
Shaffer hit a mid-range jumper to open the scoring then was fouled and made two free throws on Brownsboro's next trip down the court.
Harmon, along with her team, was hot from long range early, following the early Shaffer points with a threepointer.
Senior guard Desiree Johnson saved a ball from going out of bounds under the basket on a fast break, throwing a wrap around pass back to Shaffer filling the lane for a layup and giving the Bearettes a 9-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Shaffer nabbed an offensive rebound a short time later, putting it back up and in to cap the 11-0 run.
Then Harmon was back, driving the lane and letting go a one-hand, runner from about five feet before following moments later with a deep jumpshot from just inside the three-point arc.
After Shaffer hit the first of two free throws, point guard LaQuesha Cooper put the icing on the first quarter by nabbing the rebound on a Shaffer miss from the charity stripe and putting it back up for two points in the paint and an 18- 2 lead.
The second quarter might as well have been an offensive quarantine for the Bearettes. While the Lady Flyers were managing to score eight points in the period, Brownsboro went ice cold and were shut out for the entire period. They saw their lead cut down to 18-10.
But the cold spell defrosted in the third quarter and Brownsboro recorded 12 points to only six for La Poynor to push the lead back 14 points. Shaffer hit six in the period, with Cooper adding four, as the Bearettes rebounded from their offensive woes.
The fourth quarter saw Brownsboro slow down the pace and use up the clock while keeping the scoring down.
