Paul Bryant Managing Editor

Perry Eaton Perry Eaton A Brownsboro Independent School District official and Baptist minister is scheduled to speak during the Chandler Brownsboro Area Chamber of Com- merce luncheon on Jan. 14.

"I'll give a brief update on what's going on with our radio station, and then I'll do some fun, entertaining comedy," Perry Eaton said.

Eaton, 50, is the district's parent involvement coordinator. He also operates Bear Radio, a student-hosted Internet station, and helps run an English course for Spanish-speaking adults whose children attend schools in the distirct.

He said he usually keeps his talks light-hearted during speaking engagements.

"I do a lot of these," Eaton said. "I spoke at a state convention one time and also for the Mesquite Independent School District last year. I just do some fun comedy."

He's been with the district since October 2006. A musician and evangelist, Eaton is the pastor of Lake Community Baptist Church in Flint. He spent more than 13 years with Dogwood Baptist Church in Athens as music and youth minister before he resigned in 2006, and is the founding developer of Power Plus Youth Camps.

Eaton graduated from San Jacinto Junior College and from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor, where he received an education degree. He and his wife, Tina, have four sons: Preston, Patrick, Pierce, and Peyton.

The Poncho Duran Educational Fund finances the English classes each year for Hispanic adults. It completed its second semester last November with over 40 participants in attendance.

In its third year, Brownsboro High School's Webbased Bear Radio is looking to expand to KLTB 91.1 by the end of 2010.

The station is run by 16 students each year who earn class credits for their work. They're taught how to use the equipment, to communicate with sponsors, and to build relationships on campus and in the community. Students who've been in the program for a year must mentor others who are new to the class.

The Statesman, a Bear Radio sponsor, hosts students and other district personnel each Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

The Jan. 14 chamber luncheon is scheduled for noon at El Presidente on State Highway 31 in Brownsboro.
