Edom honors Smith for work with city

For The Statesman

Augustine Smith has been honored by Edom officials for her service as a city council member for the past 17 years.

“Her insight and support has been a great asset to the city and will be missed as she enjoys her retirement,” a press release said.

Smith’s tenure began in 1992 when she filled the unexpired term of her late husband, Edmond Smith.

The council member worked to acquire the old Edom School property and played a role in its renovation into a community center.

She also aided the startup of a seniors program that offers weekly meals and entertainment.

Smith worked on park renovation and, at her urging, Edom added a basketball court to its park.
