Bearettes No. 12 in State
With an 19-3 record to open the season, the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches have the Brownsboro Bearettes ranked No. 12 in the state, according to the TABC Web site (as of Jan. 11). Loyd Cook File Photo
The Brownsboro Bearettes used strong defensive play and solid free throw shooting in a fourth quarter that led to a 10- point win over the Westwood Lady Panthers, 43-33, Friday.
The win ran Brownsboro’s record to 18-3. The Bearettes are ranked No. 12 in the state’s Class 3A programs, according to ranks for Jan. 11 on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ Web site.
It was a 14-7 final period of play that extended the Bearettes’ three-point lead out to 10. Three Bearettes players — Synola Harmon, Hillary Shaffer and LaQuesha Cooper — combined to go 14-of-14 from the free throw line as all 14 Brownsboro points in the quarter came from the charity stripe.
The Bearettes got off to a quick, early start with a 13-2 opening quarter but the Lady Panthers chipped away at the Brownsboro lead over the next two quarters. A 7-4 quarter and a 17-12 quarter in favor of Westwood got the Lady Panthers within 29-26 after the third period.
Then came the decisive fourth quarter.
Harmon led all Bearettes scorers with 13, followed by Cooper with 10 and Shaffer with eight.
Tiffany Hurd added six points while Megan Hain had four points and Desiree Johnson had a bucket.
JV wins two in tourney
The junior varsity Bearettes closed out the annual 9th/JV Tournament in Brownsboro with an overtime win against the Van Lady Vandals.
It was a low-scoring affair all the way, with Brownsboro taking the win by outscoring Van, 1-0, in the overtime period to notch the 14-13 win.
The Bearettes held the Lady Vandals to one point in each of the final two periods before shutting their opponent out in the overtime period.
Sierra Bell had seven points for Brownsboro while Cashay Carter had three, Maegan Lough had two and Valerie Edwards had two.
In their opening game of the tournament, held Saturday, the junior varsity shut out Eustace in three of the four quarters of the game. The Eustace Lady Bulldogs scored all four of its points of the game in the second quarter as Brownsboro posted a 21-4 win.
Cashay Carter led Brownsboro with eight points while Mallorie and Maegan Lough had five points each. Sierra Bell added two points and Courtney Cook had one.
The junior varsity ran its record to 16-4 at the end of the weekend.
9th grade team splits
The freshman Bearettes won one and lost one, during the 9th/JV Tournament held in Brownsboro Saturday.
The freshman squad opened with a 27-13 win against the Chapel Hill Lady Bulldogs. The Bearettes jumped out quickly, taking the first quarter by a 12-4 count, then running their lead out to 19-7 at the half.
Morgan Barnes led the Bearetes with seven points while Shayla Mitchell added six. Jacobi Parker had five points.
Kaylan Harris, Taylor Cofer, Toni Lee and Tracy Booth each added two points and Anna Wood had one point.
The freshman lost their last game of the tournament, 25-22, to Grace Community in a close contest. Grace led 10-8 at halftime and the second half saw the two teams score within one point of the other. Brownsboro had 14 points in the second half while Grace posted 15.
Morgan Barnes led Brownsboro with eight points while Shayla Mitchell and Jacobi Parker had four points each. Toni Lee had three, Tracy Booth notched two, and Anna Wood scored one point.
