Van takes two-of-three from Bears
The Brownsboro Bears were down by nine at half to the Van Vandals, on their way to a 13-point defeat at the hand of their opponents.
Van ran out to a 6-0 lead before Brownsboro’s Tyler Rogers took a pass cutting to the basket for the Bears’ first points of the night.
Brownsboro got within 9- 7 late in the quarter when point guard Ryan Smith drove the lane for a bucket, but that was all in the period as the Vandals ran off the lasts four of the quarter for a 12-7 lead.
Van continued that run to open the second period, adding another four points before Smith hit a three-point shot just off the top of the arc to the right.
Smith would add two inside buckets and senior Zack Bailey made a steal and finished the fast break with a layup just before half-time.
But Brownsboro still found itself down 25-16 at the mid- way point of the game.
Smith added six points in the third period, including a three-pointer he hit from about five feet behind the line.
Smith would lead Brownsboro with 19 points while Cameron Warren added 12.
Rogers had six points and Bailey added four. Keuntis Thompson had two points and Kyle Yarbrough one point as Brownsboro lost, 57-44.
JV loses by four
A cold fourth quarter on the offensive end of the court spelled defeat for the junior varsity Bears Tuesday in Brownsboro.
Van sprinted out to an 8-0 lead to open the game, before Deondre Taylor hit two free throws for the Bears’ first points of the game.
Corben Duke added an offensive putback late in the period to round out all of the Bears first quarter scoring.
Van led 12-4 after one.
Willie Miller opened up the second period for Brownsboro by hitting two free throws, as did Taylor, and Scott Spearman hit a turnaround jumper in the paint as the Bears cut six off the Van lead early.
The two teams traded points for the rest of the half, with Van leading 17-15 after two.
Brownsboro actually took the lead after three periods of play, 26-25 by finishing the period with the last four points.
Taylor had 11 points, Spearman eight points and Miller four points. D.Z. Moss had three and Duke added two points.
Freshman 57, Van 42
Up by 14 after three, the freshman squad closed with an 18-9 quarter to post a 57- 42 win over the Van Vandals.
Patrick McCarthy led with 14 points, Taylor Beal had 12, and Deonte Givens had eight points.
Blake Ralson had seven points, Ryan Chapman had six points, Jacob Ludford had four points, and Kevin Elder and Meetrius Moore had two each.
