Sales-tax numbers remain down

Sales-tax revenues received locally from Texas in January combined to remain within about 5 percent of the same time last year, according to the most recent report released by the Texas Workforce Commission on its Web site.

The 16 Henderson County entities collecting the sales tax combined to receive more than $629,000 from the state in January, down from the more than $667,000 they received in the same month in 2009.

Brownsboro was more than 44 percent above last January, receiving slightly more than $13,000 this month.

Chandler was down 6 percent with receipts of nearly $27,000 in January.

Athens, the top sales-tax collector in the county, received more than $263,000 this month — down 14.3 percent from a year ago.

January sales-tax receipts represents money collected in November, reported in December, and returned back from the state this month.
