CHECKLIST CHARLIE

Here’s an idea: Do something nice for yourself
Why not do something nice for myself? I thought as I waited alone for our table in the crowded restaurant and tried not to think about my growly stomach. “We have 10 minutes,” I said to the bored young people waiting next to me. “I figure, why not make a friend?” A teacher, a nurse and a young policeman who is engaged to the soon-to-be teacher. The two of them were graduating from UTT, so they were celebrating. “You guys are like a dream team; single-handedly fixing our culture with a handful of your friends.” “You sure are positive,” said the young man responsible for keeping the streets of Mesquite safe. I was impressed with their vision, commitment, and positive can-do attitude. My day was better because they crossed my path while we were waiting for tables. A 10-minute conversation turned into inspiration; it is so encouraging to meet young people who are committed to making their world a better place. So, here are some priceless ways to make life better this year without spending a dime: • Commit to someting bigger. Volunteer to serve in our community, in your church, or help with our local festivals. • Reach out to a young friend. All around us young people are wishing for someone older who will offer an encouraging word. • Preach faith, not fear. We are inundated with a national media that is driven by fear mongering. Fear drives up ratings and sells ads. Turn off the networks and pick up your local young athletes, ribbons being cut on new businesses, people reaching out to help others. Then pass along the good news. • Give something away. Clean out a closet. Pass along the wealth. You’ll feel lighter and your closet will thank you. • Make a spot in your heart for a new friend. Pay attention; God is probably gifting you with a new friend today if you keep your heart open. • Save a little money. But don’t save it too long. Cash in your pennies or start a small savings account for a rainy day as an act of faith. But keep in mind that money is only paper until we spend it, so consider what your goal is and choose wisely. • Pat yourself on the back. Give yourself permission to enjoy the way you are designed, frailties, foibles and all. Really. You are better because you are unique. •Forgive someone. Okay, this one will cost you something, not money though, and the reward will be yours. •Laugh. May you be blessed in these and all the ways that make life a better place for you and your loved ones this year. May 2010 be a year marked by laughter and love.
