4 BHS students named to all-state band

Brownsboro High School students Justin Payne, Daniel Hawkins, Kelsey Head and James Pace ended a grueling one-month tryout by being named a member of the all-state band, BHS band director Jeff Russell said.

In December, 38 BHS band students were named to the Association of Texas Small School Bands All- Region Band.

More than 9,000 highschool band students from across Texas auditioned in 25 regions for a place in their respective all-region bands.

The top chairs in each region auditioned advanced to one of the five area auditions on Jan. 9, and only 240 of these 1,360 students were selected for all-state honors.

Justin, Daniel, Kelsey, and James are scheduled to travel to San Antonio on Tuesday where they will have their final auditions for chair placements in the ATSSB All-State band.

The bands will meet in rehearsals Feb. 9-13. They will present a concert on Feb. 13 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in downtown San Antonio.

Justin is a trombone player and a senior member of the Brownsboro High School Band. This will be his second time to perform with the All-State Band.

His other interests and accomplishments at school are National Honor Society, section leader, squad leader, and academic UIL.

He is a member of First Baptist Church in Chandler, and enjoys playing disc golf and tennis. He is the son of Paul and Lori Payne.

Daniel is a French horn player and a junior member of the Brownsboro High School Band. This will be his second time to perform with the All-State Band.

His other interests and accomplishments at school and home are squad leader, section leader, and an active youth member of First United Methodist Church. He also enjoys hunting.

He is the son of Donald and Willie Hawkins.

Kelsey is a clarinet player and a junior member of the Brownsboro High School Band. This will be her first time to perform with the All-State Band.

Her other interests and accomplishments at school and home are National Honor Society, section leader, high school majorette, and piano.

She is a member of Leagueville Baptist Church and enjoys spending time with friends and family.

She is the daughter of Kevin and Kay Head of Murchison.

James is a French horn player and a sophomore in the Brownsboro High School Band. This will be his first time to perform with the All-State Band.

His other interests and accomplishments at school and home are squad leader, Youth with a Mission, and drama.

James is a member of the Martin Springs Baptist Church. He is the son of Joanna Black of Chandler.
