A second quarter where its offense could be described, at best, as “cold” was the difference in a 34- 28 loss for the Brownsboro Bears against the Fairfield Eagles Friday.
The game didn’t start off that way.
Although Fairfield scored the first bucket of the game, and Brownsboro didn’t get on the board until there was only 3:12 left in the opening period, the Bears outscored the Eagles 7-2 for a three-point lead going into the second period.
The Bears period-ending run was sparked by point guard Ryan Smith, who drove the lane twice for layup buckets ... the second time getting the “and 1” for the three-point play the old-fashioned way. Then Smith hit Cameron Warren underneath the basket for an easy layup.
Then the second quarter.
Smith got the only Bears bucket in the period, a floating one-hander from the middle of the paint.
But Fairfield hit five-of-seven free throws, plus three buckets, in the period for an 11-2 period in their favor and a 15-9 half-time lead.
Smith and Jacob McCarthy scored four apiece in the third quarter which, along with Tyler Rogers’ two free throws, gave the Bears the period at 10-5, but still left Brownsboro down by one at 20-19.
And Fairfield ran out the rest of the game with a 14-9 fourth quarter to post the final margin of victory.
Smith led the Bears with 17 points while McCarthy added five points.
Rogers had four points and Warren had two points.

The junior varsity Bears got down early, 10-3 after one, then came back with a strong second period to take the lead at half-time, 14-13.
But Fairfield slightly outscored Brownsboro in each of the next two periods to eke out a four-point win.
Deondre Taylor led the Bears with 14 points and Corben Duke added six.
Scott Spearman had four points, Cody Strickland had three points, Kris Bryant had two points, and Willie Miller had one point.
