Buzzer-beater gives Bearettes one-point win
Loyd Cook Photo LaQuesha Cooper (11) works the court during the Brownsboro Bearettes’ thrilling 45-44 buzzer-beating win over the Fairfield Lady Eagles Friday.
The scoreboard showed Triple- Zero like there was no time left in the game ... but the actual clock mechanism display at the scorer’s table showed there was actual sixtenths of a second left in the game.
And it was just enough for the Brownsboro Bearettes.
Brownsboro’s Tiffany Hurd took an inbound pass just under the basket, as much slapping it toward the backboard as shooting it, and directed the ball off the glass and through the net with the final buzzer sounding ... and pushing the Bearettes to a 45-44 win over the Fairfield Lady Eagles Friday.
It was two of Hurd’s four points in the game for Brownsboro (24-4, 6-1 ... all four of her points came in the fourth quarter as the Bearettes managed only six total points in the final period of play.
The game was close throughout.
The first quarter saw each time take a three-point lead at one point -- the largest lead either would have in the period -- before ending in a 14-14 tie.
Brownsboro’s scoring in the quarter was spread around. Hillary Shaffer had seven points. Yniqua Mosley was fouled on a threepoint attempt, making all three free throws. Point guard LaQuesha Cooper hit a 15-foot jumper, and Synola Harmon hit a short jump shot in the paint for Brownsboro’s final points of the period.
Fairfield (19-9, 6-1) opened the second period with a bucket, but Cooper answered back by canning two free throws to tie.
After four free throws by the Lady Eagles, Harmon hit a threepointer to cut Fairfield’s lead to one and Cooper hit one-of-two free throws to tie the score.
Two more Fairfield free throws put Brownsboro down at half-time, 22-20.
It was a narrow, positive margin in the third quarter that proved to be the difference for the Bearettes.
Down 32-28 early in the period, Brownsboro went on a 6-1 lead to take only its second lead of the game, this time at the 3:07 point of the third quarter.
Cooper hit another free throw. Desiree Johnson hit Shaffer with a pass inside for an easy two in the paint and, coming full circle, Cooper closed the run with another oneof two from the free throw line.
The lead was short-lived for the Bearettes, who found themselves down 37-35 a moment or so later.
But Shaffer hit a free throw and Harmon another three-pointer to put Brownsboro up by two, 39-37.
Strangely, that would prove to be important.
In the fourth quarter, the Bearettes defense held Fairfield to only seven points. That was important as well, since the Brownsboro offense managed only six in the quarter.
Shaffer hit two free throws, the only non- Hurd points in the quarter for Brownsboro. Her shots put the Bearettes up 41-37 at the 5:10 mark of the fourth quarter.
Fairfield went on a 5-0 run to take the lead back at 42-41.
Then Hurd recorded her first points of the game ... a 12-foot, rainbow jump shot from the right baseline that went home with 43 seconds left in the game and putting the Bearettes back on top at 43-42.
But the Lady Eagle responded on their ensuing possession, driving the lane for a short shot and a 44-43 lead.
Bearettes head coach Fred Griffin used his final timeout with 18 seconds left in the game, setting up a play, but the Fairfield defense knocked the ball out with six-tenths of a second left in the game.
The Hurd made her final shot of the game for the Bearettes win as the buzzer went off.
Harmon led Brownsboro with 13 points and Shaffer had 12. Cooper added nine points for the Bearettes.
Mosley had five points, Hurd had four, and Lakeshia Johnson had two points.
